“Many people are spending their money rather than saving it. Is this a positive or negative trend?”

Bài mẫu Band 8 (khoảng 285 từ)

In many societies today, a growing number of people choose to spend their earnings immediately instead of putting money aside for the future. In my view, while this behaviour can occasionally stimulate the economy, it is on the whole a negative trend, both for individuals and for society.

Admittedly, higher spending does bring certain benefits. When consumers purchase goods and services freely, businesses enjoy stronger demand, which can create jobs and drive economic growth. On a personal level, spending on meaningful experiences such as travel or education may also enrich people’s lives in ways that a bank balance cannot.

Nevertheless, the drawbacks of a spend-now culture are more significant. Individuals who fail to save leave themselves financially vulnerable; without a safety net, an unexpected event such as illness or job loss can quickly push them into debt. This is particularly worrying given rising living costs and uncertain economic conditions. Moreover, a widespread reluctance to save can harm society as a whole: when few people accumulate savings, banks have less capital to lend, and governments may face greater pressure to support those who have made no provision for retirement or emergencies.

For these reasons, I believe the habit of spending rather than saving is a worrying development. A more balanced approach — enjoying a reasonable portion of one’s income while consistently setting money aside — would leave both individuals and the wider economy far more secure.

In conclusion, although free spending can offer short-term enjoyment and economic stimulation, its long-term risks outweigh these advantages, making it a largely negative trend.

Mổ xẻ vì sao bài này đạt Band 8

1. Task Response

Đề hỏi “positive or negative” nên bài chọn lập trường RÕ (“largely negative”) ngay mở bài và giữ vững. Bài vẫn công nhận mặt tích cực (đoạn 2) rồi lập luận mặt tiêu cực mạnh hơn (đoạn 3) – đây là cách xử lý dạng positive/negative ở band cao: không viết một chiều, mà CÂN ĐO rồi nghiêng hẳn về một phía.

2. Coherence & Cohesion

Bố cục mạch lạc: mỗi đoạn một chức năng (thừa nhận lợi ích → phản biện → giải pháp cân bằng). Từ nối đúng vai: Admittedly (thừa nhận), Nevertheless / Moreover (phản biện, bổ sung), For these reasons (kết luận đoạn). Không mở đầu mọi câu bằng “Firstly/Secondly”.

3. Lexical Resource

Collocation chủ đề tiền bạc ăn điểm: put money aside, stimulate the economy, stronger demand, drive economic growth, financially vulnerable, a safety net, push them into debt, rising living costs, accumulate savings, make provision for retirement. Đây là bộ từ bạn nên “bỏ túi” cho mọi đề Money.

4. Grammatical Range

Đa dạng và chính xác: mệnh đề quan hệ (“which can create jobs”), câu ghép với dấu chấm phẩy, cấu trúc so sánh (“outweigh these advantages”), cụm hiện tại phân từ, danh động từ (“enjoying… while setting money aside”).
