Ngày 8 — The media

Margaret Preston's vibrant paintings and prints of Australian flowers, animals and landscapes have delighted the Australian public since the early 1920s.
Margaret Preston was born Margaret Rose McPherson in Port Adelaide, South Australia in 1875, the daughter of David McPherson, a Scottish marine engineer and his wife Prudence Lyle. She and her sister were sent at first to a private school, but when family circumstances changed, her mother took the girls to Sydney where Margaret attended a public high school. She decided early in life to become an artist and took private art lessons. In 1888, she trained for several months with Sydney landscape painter William Lister, and in 1893 enrolled at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, where she studied for just over four years.
In 1898, after her father died, Margaret returned to Adelaide to study and then teach at the Adelaide School of Design. Her early artwork was influenced by the German aesthetic tradition, in which subjects of the natural world were depicted in a true to life manner.
Margaret's first visit to Europe in 1904, and her studies in Paris, France had little impact on this naturalism that dominated her work from this early period. However some eight years later, after returning to Paris, she began to recognise the decorative possibilities of art.
With the outbreak of the First World War, Margaret traveled to England, where she had exhibitions and continued her studies of art. She was a student of pottery, but at some time developed her interest in various techniques of printmaking and design. In England's West Country, she taught basket weaving at a rehabilitation unit for servicemen. It was on board a boat returning to Australia that she met wealthy businessman William Preston, whom she married in 1919. Together Margaret and William settled in the Sydney harbourside suburb of Mosman. The most characteristic prints from her early years in Sydney are views of boats floating on Sydney Harbour and of houses clustered on foreshore hills. Although Sydney was their home, the couple traveled regularly, both overseas and within Australia.
Her first major showing in Australia was with her friend Thea Proctor, in exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney in 1925. Many of Preston's prints were hand-coloured in rich scarlet reds, blues and greens, and all of them were set in Chinese red lacquer frames. Harbour views were again prominent, but in comparison with earlier artworks, they were compact and busy. using striking contrasts of black and white combined with elaborate patterns and repetitions. Other prints from this period featured native flora. It was with these still-life subjects that she convinced the public that Australian native flowers were equal in beauty to any exotic species.
From 1932 to 1939, Preston moved away from Sydney and lived with her husband at Berowra, on the upper reaches of the Hawkesbury River. The area was one of rugged natural beauty, and for the first time Preston found herself living in a home surrounded bush. Prior to this, the native flowers that featured in her paintings and prints had been purchased from local florists; they now grew in abundance around her home. Preston's prints became larger, less complex and less reliant on the use of bright colours. Flowers were no longer arranged in vases, and Preston began to concentrate instead on flowers that were growing wild.
While living at Berowra, and undoubtedly prompted by the Aboriginal' rock engravings found near her property, Preston also developed what was to he a lifelong interest in Aboriginal art. On returning to Sydney in 1939, she became a member of the Anthropological Society of New South Wales, and later visited many important Aboriginal sites throughout Australia. Preston believed that Aboriginal art provided the key to establishing a national body of art that reflected the vast and ancient continent of Australia.
During the 1940s, symbols used by Aboriginal people, together with dried, burnt colours found in traditional Aboriginal paintings, became increasingly prominent in her prints. The artist's titles from this period frequently acknowledge her sources, and reveal the extent to which she drew inspiration from traditional Aboriginal art to create her own art.
It was in 1953, at the age of 78, that Preston produced her most significant prints. The exhibition at Macquarie Galleries in Sydney included 29 prints made using the ancient technique known as stenciling. Many of the artworks in the exhibition incorporated her fusion of Aboriginal and Chinese concepts. Preston had admired Chinese art since 1915, when she acquired the first of her many books on the subject, and she had visited China on two occasions. Chinese elements may be found in several of her earlier paintings.
However, in her prints of the 1950s, Preston combined Chinese ideas with her understanding of the Dreamtime' creation stories of Aboriginal Australians. Preston did not let age alter her habit of working hard. As she got older, her love of painting, printmaking and travel continued. By the time of her death in 1963, when she was 88, she had produced over 400 paintings and prints. In a career spanning almost 60 years, she created a body of work that demonstrates her extraordinary originality and the intensity of her commitment to Australian art.
Câu 1–7 — TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Choose TRUE if the statement agrees with the information given in the text, choose FALSE if the statement contradicts the information, or choose NOT GIVEN if there is no information on this.
- Artists in the German aesthetic tradition portrayed nature realistically.
Đoạn 3: “influenced by the German aesthetic tradition, in which subjects of the natural world were depicted in a true to life manner” — true to life chính là realistically, nên TRUE.
- Margaret attended a famous art college in Paris.
Bài chỉ nói “her studies in Paris, France”.
- Margaret met her husband William while teaching a craft at a rehabilitation unit.
Hai việc nằm ở hai chỗ khác nhau trong đoạn 5. Bà dạy đan giỏ “at a rehabilitation unit for servicemen”, còn gặp chồng thì “It was on board a boat returning to Australia that she met wealthy businessman William Preston”.
- Margaret Preston and Thea Proctor explored similar themes in their art.
Đoạn 6 chỉ nói hai người triển lãm chung: “Her first major showing in Australia was with her friend Thea Proctor”.
- Margaret's 1925 artworks of Sydney Harbour were simpler than her previous ones.
Đoạn 6, ngay sau chỗ nói về triển lãm 1925: “Harbour views were again prominent, but in comparison with earlier artworks, they were compact and busy, using striking contrasts of black and white combined with elaborate patterns and repetitions.”
- The colours in Margaret's Berowra prints were very bright.
Đoạn 7: “Preston’s prints became larger, less complex and less reliant on the use of bright colours” — bài nói ít màu rực, câu hỏi nói rất rực. Ngược nhau, nên FALSE.
- When living in Berowra, Margaret painted flowers in their natural location.
Đoạn 7: “Flowers were no longer arranged in vases, and Preston began to concentrate instead on flowers that were growing wild”, và trước đó hoa “now grew in abundance around her home” thay vì mua ở hàng hoa. Đúng ý in their natural location, nên TRUE.
Câu 8–13 — Notes completion
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Complete the notes below. Choose ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each answer.
Margaret Preston's later life. Aboriginal influence — her interest in Aboriginal art was inspired by seeing rock engravings close to her Berowra home. She incorporated(8) and colours from Aboriginal art in her own work, and often referred to Aboriginal sources in the(9) she gave her artworks. 1953 exhibition — a very old method of(10) was used for some prints, and the show was inspired by(11) about Chinese art that she had started collecting in 1915, combining Chinese and Aboriginal elements. Old age — she was still interested in(12) and art, and worked for nearly six decades making more than(13) artworks.
|---|---|---|
| 1 | realistically | |

| 7 | in their natural location | |
| 9 | in the … she gave her artworks | |
| 10 | very old method |

Hello Sam, come in and sit down …
Thanks.
You’re here to discuss your company-based IT project aren’t you?
Yes … I’ve been to see the Manager and he’s given me a lot of ideas about projects that the company would find useful. But I wanted to ask your opinion about them before I choose one.
Yes, that’s fine. Now this company’s called Turners isn’t it?
That’s right. It’s a small engineering company – they make machine components for trade use. They’re well established – they started in nineteen seventy-six – but they’re a bit old fashioned.
OK … And what kind of projects did Turners suggest you could do for the company?
Well, they want some improvements made to their customer database . The one that they’ve got at the moment isn’t very useful in some ways. I had a quick look at it …
That would be a very straightforward project, and it’d be simple enough to evaluate, but I don’t think you’d get enough out of a project like that. You wouldn’t learn anything new.
Well another project they suggested is to do with their online sales catalogue . At the moment customers can look at their products but they can’t actually order them online, which must affect their competitiveness. But I said I thought it would take too long, it’s quite a big task.
You’re right. It’s too much for the time you’ve got. It’s a pity though.
Then they want some help with their payroll system . At the moment the way they calculate pay involves a lot of manual accounting. I suggested they could have a system where employees register electronically when they arrive and leave work, so the hours they do could be transferred automatically.
I think you’d get a lot out of a project like that – it would extend your skills but it wouldn’t be too much to take on. A student did something similar a couple of years ago, but this is slig htly different.
Well, then they need help with their stock inventory . They do everything manually …
Really?
Yes! And it takes so much time.
It’s probably very inaccurate too … An electronic inventory would probably be the biggest single benefit for the company. I’m surprised they haven’t had it done before.
I know! Then they wanted to improve their internal security . The Manager had visited other companies where the staff use swipe cards to access various areas of the building … It sounded useful, but the trouble is, I’m not really sure how to do it.
Well, I think you’re right in that assessm ent. At the moment it’s probably a bit beyond your level of knowledge. Is that all?
Just one more … Customer Service . They want to be able to collect feedback from their customers in a more systematic way. At the moment it’s a bit of a mess, and they probably lose business as a result.
Would that involve you going to see customers at their own premises? Because in that case you might have to do a fair amount of travelling, and that would incur expenses that haven’t been agreed with these companies.
I never thought of that …
Well it might not be a problem, but it’s something that needs clarifying … Well I hope that’s been helpful in narrowing down the options?
Yes it has, thanks. I’ll be able to make a decision now. But while I’m here, can I talk to you about coursework?
Sure .
Sam: I’m not very happy about the way our group assignment is working. There are some problems .
Tutor: Oh dear. Are people just not getting on with each other? That’s the worst thing …
Sam: Actually we’re all friends, it’s not that, but when we’re having a discussion about the assignment one or two people end up doing all the talking, and the rest don’t say anything. It’s a bit frustrating, because we need plenty of debate …
Tutor: Well that’s a common observation. You’re studying in a group with people from all over the world, and you all have your own ways of participating. In some places students are more used to listening than talking, and vice versa.
Sam: Mmm. I suppose you’re right … I’ll try to remember that …
Tutor: Does everyone pull their weight as far as sharing the workload is concerned?
Sam: I’d say they do, yes. And our group elected a leader. She’s very good at making sure no one’s overloaded … But personally I feel that there are just too many of us in the group . Whenever we try to arrange a meeting there’s always at least one person who can’t make it. It’s not anyone’s fault. It’s just that we’ve all got slightly different timetables.
Tutor: Well I’m glad you’ve talked to me about it. Feedback is always useful. Is there anything else you’re concerned about?
Sam: There are a couple of problems with lecturers that all the students are talking about …
Tutor: Last semester we had negative feedback about the way lectures were organised. There were several occasions when the wrong room had been booked, or the same room had been booked twice … that sort of thing. Is that still a problem?
Sam: That hasn’t happened at all as far as I know …
Tutor: Oh good, it’s sorted out then.
Sam: But … I don’t know the reason, but some of the staff often turn up late, so we miss ten or fifteen minutes of our lecture time … It might be because they’ve been copying handouts for students, I think there’s a queue for the machine sometimes …
Tutor: Well I’ll look into that. Thank you for telling me. Anything else?
Sam: The other thing is that it can be very difficult to get to see a lecturer individually . They’re all very supportive and friendly when you do manage to find them, but often they’re not in their office, even at times when they’re meant to be available for consultation.
Tutor: OK … That’s helpful … Now before you leave, let me…

Shadowing — Office dialogue
|---|---|
| 4:32 | Did you get up to much at the weekend? |
| 4:35 | Yeah, I went to the pub with my friends. |
| 4:38 | You should have come. |
| 4:40 | Well, if you'd told me, I would have. |
| 4:43 | I think I might have mentioned it. |
| 4:46 | I don't think you did. |
| 4:48 | Oh, right. Sorry. |
| 4:49 | I should have sent you a message. |
| 4:52 | By the way, I'm going on holiday to Malta this weekend. |
| 4:57 | Lucky you. |
| 4:58 | I went there last year, but we had quite cold weather. |
| 5:01 | I think it's supposed to be okay at the moment. |
| 5:04 | Oh, that reminds me. |
| 5:06 | Can you lend me your snorkel? |
| 5:08 | I want to go swimming in the sea. |
| 5:10 | I wouldn't recommend going this time of year. |
| 5:12 | There are lots of jellyfish. |
| 5:16 | Oh, dear. Have a great time though, |
| 5:18 | and don't forget to send me a postcard. |
Cả chặng xoay quanh một dạng: should have come · would have · might have mentioned · should have sent. Nói tự nhiên thì have gần như biến mất, chỉ còn một tiếng /əv/ rất nhẹ — should’ve · would’ve · might’ve. Con đọc nhẹ đúng như băng, đừng tách rời “should — have”.
Bước 3 — chặng 2 (4:52 → 5:04). Khúc kể chuyện đi Malta. Câu dài nhất chặng: “I went there last year, but we had quite cold weather.”
3. Nghe rõ giọng con: máy tách được giọng con khỏi tiếng băng.
4. Ba chỗ nuốt chữ d: lend me · recommend going · send me — đọc liền, không bật rõ chữ d.
Một cụm đáng nhớ ở dòng 4:49. “I should have sent you a message.” Cả đoạn này là hai người bạn rủ nhau đi chơi, nên mấy cụm ở đây (get up to much · you should have come · that reminds me) con dùng lại được ngay ở mầm 5 hôm nay, khi nói về một người con thân.
Mẫu mở bài đúng: “Online communication has changed the way families and friends keep in touch. While some people argue that it has weakened these relationships, I believe…”
A. NÓI — Part 2
Part 2 (1 phút chuẩn bị, nói 1–2 phút)
[‘Describe a person you get on well with.
You should say: who the person is · how you met · what you usually do together — and explain why you get on so well.‘]
Some people say that technology has made it easier to keep in touch with family and friends, while others believe it has made real relationships weaker. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Dàn ý Task 2 và tiêu chí chấm
Mở bài viết lại đề bằng chữ của con và nêu rõ ý kiến riêng · Thân 1 trình bày quan điểm thứ nhất kèm một ví dụ cụ thể · Thân 2 trình bày quan điểm thứ hai kèm ví dụ · Kết bài nhắc lại ý kiến của con, không thêm ý mới.
