Ngày 7 — Articles / countable and uncountable nouns / quantifiers
Câu nào sai, con xem lại đáp án rồi đọc to câu đúng một lần.
- Con có thể chia làm 2 lượt, không cần làm hết một mạch (ví dụ A–C rồi nghỉ, sau đó D–G).
Hôm nay là ngữ pháp, không phải từ mới: a / an / the hay không mạo từ, danh từ đếm được và không đếm được, và các lượng từ (many · much · a few · a little). Phần G ôn lại Future time của Unit 5 — bộ luật con học ở Ngày 6, nay gặp lần thứ hai.
A. MẠO TỪ — a, an, the hoặc ZERO (10 câu)
Điền a, an, the, hoặc viết zero nếu câu không cần mạo từ.

Bài: Reducing electricity consumption on the Isle of Eigg — 857 từ, 10 đoạn.
The Isle of Eigg is situated off the West Coast of Scotland, and is reached by ferry from the mainland. For the island community of about a hundred residents, it has always been expensive to import products, materials and skilled labour from the mainland, and this has encouraged a culture of self-sufficiency and careful use of resources. Today, although the island now has most modem conveniences, CO2 emissions per household are 20 percent lower than the UK average, and electricity use is 50 percent lower.
When Eigg designed its electricity grid, which was switched on in February 2008, it quickly became apparent that in order to keep the capital building costs down, it would be necessary to manage demand. This would also allow the island to generate most of its electricity from renewable sources, mainly water, wind and solar power. This goal was overseen by the Eigg Heritage Trust (EHT).
Eigg manages electricity demand mainly by capping the instantaneous power that can be used to five kilowatts (kW) for a household and ten kW for a business. If usage goes over the limit, the electricity supply is cut off and the maintenance team must be called to come and switch it back on again. All households and businesses have energy monitors, which display current and cumulative electricity usage, and sound an alarm when consumption reaches a user-defined level, usually set a few hundred watts below the actual limit. The result is that Eigg residents have a keen sense of how much power different electrical appliances use, and are careful to minimise energy consumption.
Demand is also managed by warning the entire island when renewable energy generation is lower than demand, and diesel generators are operating to back it up – a so-called ‘red light day’, as opposed to ‘green light days’ when there is sufficient renewable energy. Residents then take steps to temporarily reduce electricity demand further still, or postpone demand until renewable energy generation has increased.
Energy use on the island has also been reduced through improved wall and loft insulation in homes, new boilers, solar water heating, carsharing and various small, energy-saving measures in households. New energy supplies are being developed, including sustainably harvested forests to supply wood for heating.
Eigg Heritage Trust has installed insulation in all of its own properties at no cost to the tenants, while private properties have paid for their own insulation to be installed. The same applies for installations of solar water heating, although not all Trust properties have received this as yet. The Trust also operates a Green Grants scheme, where residents can claim 50 percent of the cost of equipment to reduce carbon emissions, up to a limit of £300. Purchases included bikes, solar water heating, secondary glazing, thicker curtains, and greenhouses to grow food locally, rather than importing it.
Prior to the installation of the new electricity grid and renewable energy generation, most households on Eigg used diesel generators to supply electricity, resulting in significant carbon emissions. Homes were also poorly insulated and had old, inefficient oil-burning boilers, or used coal for heating.
The work by the Eigg Heritage Trust to reduce energy use has resulted in significant reductions in carbon emissions from the island’s households and businesses. The average annual electricity use per household is just 2,160 kilowatt hours (kWh), compared to a UK average in 2008 of 4,198 kWh. Domestic carbon emissions have fallen by 47 percent, from 8.4 to 4.45 tonnes per year. This compares to average UK household emissions of 5.5 to 6 tonnes per year. The emissions should fall even further over the next few years as the supply of wood for heating increases.
The completion of Eigg’s electricity grid has made a significant difference to the island’s residents, freeing them from dependence on diesel generators and providing them with a stable and affordable power supply. A reliable electricity supply has brought improvements in other areas, for example, better treatment of drinking water in some houses, and the elimination of the constant noise of diesel generators. Improved home insulation and heating has also yielded benefits, making it more affordable to keep homes at a comfortable temperature. One of the incentives for capping electricity use, rather than charging different amounts according to usage, was to make access to energy equitable. Every household has the same five kW cap, irrespective of income, so distributing the available resources equally across the island’s population.
Eigg’s electricity grid supports four part-time maintenance jobs on the island, and residents have also been employed for building work to improve Trust-owned houses and other buildings. Likewise, the start of organised harvesting of wood for heating has created several forestry jobs for residents. A part-time ‘green project manager’ post has also been created. A wider economic impact has come from having a reliable and affordable electricity supply, which has enabled several new businesses to start up, including restaurants, shops, guest houses and self-catering accommodation. As Eigg has become known for cutting carbon emissions and protecting the environment, an increasing number of visitors have come to the island to learn about its work, bringing a further economic benefit to the residents.
Câu 1–7 — Short answer
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each answer.
- Approximately how many people live on Eigg?
- What proportion of a UK household's electricity consumption does an Eigg household consume?
- Apart from wind and sun, where does most of Eigg's electricity come from?
- What device measures the amount of electricity Eigg's households are using?
- When renewable energy supplies are insufficient, what backs them up?
- What has EHT provided free of charge in all the houses it owns?
- Which gardening aid did some Eigg inhabitants claim grants for?
Câu 8–13 — TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Do the following statements agree with the information given in Reading Passage? TRUE là bài nói đúng điều đó · FALSE là bài nói ngược lại · NOT GIVEN là bài không nhắc tới.
- Electricity was available for the first time on Eigg when a new grid was switched on.
Đoạn 7: “most households on Eigg used diesel generators to supply electricity” — đảo đã có điện từ trước, chỉ là từ máy phát. Câu nói “lần đầu tiên có điện” nên là FALSE, không phải NOT GIVEN. Gặp chữ for the first time thì tìm xem bài có nói gì về giai đoạn trước đó hay không.
- Eigg's carbon emissions are now much lower than before.
Đoạn 8: “Domestic carbon emissions have fallen by 47 percent, from 8.4 to 4.45 tonnes per year” — giảm gần một nửa, nên TRUE.
- Wood will soon be the main source of heating on Eigg.
Bài nói “sustainably harvested forests to supply wood for heating” và “as the supply of wood for heating increases”, nhưng không nói gỗ sẽ thành nguồn chính. Thiếu đúng chữ main nên là NOT GIVEN.
- Eigg is quieter as a result of having a new electricity supply.
Đoạn 9: “the elimination of the constant noise of diesel generators” — hết tiếng ồn tức yên tĩnh hơn, nên TRUE.
- Well-off households pay higher prices for the use of extra electricity.
Đoạn 9: “Every household has the same five kW cap, irrespective of income” — bài nói ngược lại câu hỏi, nên FALSE.
- The new electricity grid has created additional employment opportunities on Eigg.
Đoạn 10: “supports four part-time maintenance jobs”, “created several forestry jobs”, “enabled several new businesses to start up” — nên TRUE.
|---|---|---|
| 2 | proportion of a UK household's consumption | |
| 4 | device measures the amount | |
| 5 | backs them up | |
| 8 | available for the first time | |
| 11 | quieter | |
| 12 | Well-off households pay higher prices | |
| 13 | additional employment opportunities |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | electricity use is 50 percent lower | đoạn A |

Transcript
Speaker 1
Part Two, you will hear a traffic police officer talking to a group of listeners about driving licence application and traffic conditions in the UK. First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15?
Speaker 1
Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15. Hello, I'm Edward, and I'm here to tell you about road conditions in various areas of the UK. I am also going to tell you about driver's licenses in the UK. If you have never had a driver's license, or you have one from another country, and you want to get a UK license, you must be a UK resident. You will need to show a medical report when your UK license needs to be renewed. If you are trying to translate your original foreign driving license to apply for a UK license, which is a must. If you want to be able to drive here, you will need to visit an official agency. These are scattered throughout the London area and are well equipped to assist you with any questions you might have and any services they offer are included in your license fee. If you already have a translated license, but need some personal information updating, you do not need to pay for the update, they'll do it for free. When you are getting a new driving license, you may need to have a new photo taken as some photos are rejected. It's actually okay if your photo is too small since we can get it enlarged with our printer. The majority of rejected photos are the ones that were taken with a cream backdrop instead of a monotone gray background. We've now found that photos with the latter allow us to identify the license holder much more easily. If you were wearing glasses on the previous photo, you don't need to worry about it since it is still allowed. If you are not sure whether your previous license is still valid than the license checking service is for you. The procedures are quite clear, and you just have to follow them. Ideally, I would like to see the process going faster since it can take hours to finish. From my standpoint, it will help if all the applicants bring the necessary identification with them, then all they have to do is just fill in the forms accordingly step by step. I'm often asked whether I have a personal recommendation about the fastest or cheapest place to get all this done. But I think it really depends on where you are, they can all get busy at some point. And when it is quiet at one branch, it may be busy in another. So take your pick. All I would say is that there is absolutely no difference in price. It's a standard fee. The only advice I would give is that the quickest way to complete an application is to fill out the form on the internet and then bring a print copy with you to the agency location of your choice. Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20.
Speaker 1
Now listen carefully and answer questions 16 to 20. Next, people frequently asked me what I think of the road conditions in some of our cities. London is obviously the biggest and busiest and there are lots of parking restrictions one way systems and so on. But on the hole I find the traffic signs are very clear. In Edinburgh most people use digital maps to get to know local traffic and road conditions which can be estimated through different traffic flow lines. It is a city of lights, traffic lights, but they're extremely efficient as they're timed perfectly to get the traffic flowing smoothly. That's important because pedestrian areas and crossings are always packed with people on foot which need Strong regulation, the city of Cardiff has tackled traffic flow in a different way. It recently completed a road expansion scheme, and the extra lanes of the dual carriageway are easing congestion. It's a similar story in Manchester. Instead of going through the town center, most vehicles choose ring roads so as to avoid the downtown congestion. It can still happen though, so there's a possibility that the city will introduce checkpoints where the police can intervene to direct traffic at peak periods. And finally, they say All roads lead to Rome. And you could say that about Oxford. I like the many options for getting in and out of the city because drivers can always find alternative routes. The other cities in the UK are that is the end of part two. You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to part two.
Đáp án key table
| Câu | Người nói dùng từ |
|---|---|
| 1 | you must be a UK resident |
| 3 | rejected photos |
| 5 | fill out the form on the internet |
Shadowing — Coffee shop dialogue
|---|---|
| 4:19 | Hello. Can I get a coffee, please? |
| 4:23 | Sure. Is that to drink in or take away? |
| 4:26 | Drink in please. |
| 4:29 | Would you like any milk or sugar? |
| 4:32 | Oh, just a splash of milk, please. |
| 4:36 | Here you are. You can sit anywhere you like. |
| 4:41 | Thanks. |
| 4:42 | Would you like a receipt? |
| 4:45 | Oh, no. Thank you. |
| 4:46 | What time do you shut? |
| 4:48 | At five o'clock. |
| 4:50 | But that's in five minutes. |
Hai chỗ nối âm mà chính video dạy: Can I dính thành một tiếng, và get a nghe như “ge-ta”. Con đọc liền, đừng tách từng từ.
Bước 3 — chặng 2 (4:32 → 4:45). Hai câu mời. Would you nói nhanh thành một tiếng /wʊʤə/, nghe như “u-giơ”: “Would you like any milk or sugar?” và “Would you like a receipt?”
Câu hỏi giờ đóng cửa: “What time do you shut?” — do you rút thành /ʤə/, nghe như “giơ”.
3. Nghe rõ giọng con: máy tách được giọng con khỏi tiếng băng.
4. Ba chỗ rút âm: Can I get a · Would you · do you — đọc dính thành một tiếng, đừng tách từng từ.
A. NÓI — Part 1
Part 1 (3 câu, mỗi câu 20–30 giây)
[‘How do you usually travel around your city?’, ‘Do you think people in your city drive carefully? Why?’, ‘Would you like to try a driverless car? Why or why not?’]

4. Bảng chỉ cho số liệu thô. Con tự tính chênh lệch (Eigg thấp hơn bao nhiêu, gấp mấy lần) rồi viết thành câu so sánh — đó chính là phần make comparisons mà đề yêu cầu.
