Ngày 15 — Tăng Tốc — Happy Daily Tasks

IELTS Tăng Tốc · Ngày 15

Ngày 15 — The law and crime

  1. Làm gì: Ôn lại bộ từ The law and crime của Unit 12 — hôm nay không có từ mới, bảy phần đều là bộ từ con đã học ở Ngày 14.
  2. Bao nhiêu câu: 74 câu (7 phần) — đúng 60 câu (80%) là đạt

Phần G ÔN LẠI Comparatives and superlatives của Unit 11 — lần thứ hai.

A. ĐIỀN VÀO ĐOẠN VĂN (12 câu)

accused · burglar · bystander · evidence · hooligan · persecute · proof · prosecute · robber · suspect · vandal · witness

Last spring our street woke up to find that someone had sprayed paint across six garage doors. A (1) had been at work in the night. Two days later a (2) got in through a neighbour's kitchen window and took a laptop; a week after that a (3) stopped a woman in the car park and demanded her bag. There had been trouble after the match on Saturday too, when a group of (4) smashed bottles outside the pub. The police said the crimes were probably unconnected. They had very little (5) to work with — no fingerprints, no clear pictures. My neighbour kept saying she already had a (6) in mind, but the officer explained that a feeling is not the same thing as (7) , and that without it they could not charge anyone. Then a man who had been walking his dog came forward. He had seen the whole thing in the car park, so he was a (8) , not just a (9) who happened to be nearby. His statement was enough for the police to make an arrest, and by the summer the (10) was standing in court. The lawyers said the city would (11) him for three separate offences. One of the teenagers from the next street was questioned too, and let go — the officer told my neighbour that the police must never (12) someone simply because of where they live or who their family are.

Đọc — Designed to Last

Mầm 2

  1. Làm gì: Đọc bài Designed to Last ngay trên trang, rồi trả lời 13 câu bên dưới.
  2. Bao nhiêu câu: 13 câu (5 trắc nghiệm · 4 ô tóm tắt chọn chữ cái · 4 YES/NO/NOT GIVEN) — đúng 7 câu (50%) là đạt

Bài: Designed to Last — 1005 từ, 10 đoạn mang nhãn A–J. Bài mở đầu bằng một dòng phụ đề không mang nhãn: “Could better design cure our throwaway culture?” Mười đoạn A–J nằm ngay dưới.

Jonathan Chapman, a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton, UK, is one of a new breed of “sustainable designers’. Like many of us, they are concerned about the huge waste associated with Western consumer culture and the damage this does to the environment. Some, like Chapman, aim to create objects we will want to keep rather than discard. Others are working to create more efficient or durable consumer goods or goods designed with recycling in mind. The waste entailed in our fleeting relationships with consumer durables is colossal

Domestic power tools, such as electric drills, are a typical example of such waste. However much DIY the purchaser plans to do, the truth is that these things are thrown away having been used, on average, for just ten minutes. Most will serve conscience time, gathering dust on a shelf in the garage; people are reluctant to admit that they have wasted their money. However, the end is inevitable for thousands of years in landfill waste sites. In its design, manufacture, packaging, transportation, and disposal, a power tool consumes many times its own weight in resources, all for a shorter active lifespan than that of the average small insect.

To understand why we have become so wasteful, we should look to the underlying motivation of consumers. ‘People own things to give expression to who they are and to show what group of people they feel they belong to’ Chapman says. In a world of mass production, however, that symbolism has lost much of its potency. For most of human history, people had an intimate relationship with objects they used or treasured. Often they made the objects themselves, or family members passed them on. For more specialist objects, people relied on expert manufacturers living close by, whom they probably knew personally. Chapman points out that all these factors gave objects a history – a narrative – and an emotional connection that today’s mass production cannot match. Without these personal connections, consumerist culture instead of idolizes novelty. We know we can’t buy happiness, but the chance to remake ourselves with glossy , box-fresh products seems irresistible. When the novelty fades we simply renew the excitement by buying more new stuff: what John Thackara of Doors of Perception, a network for sharing ideas about the future of design, calls the “schlock of the new”.

As a sustainable designer, Chapman’s solution is what he calls “emotionally durable design”. Think about your favourite old jeans. They just don’t have the right feel until they have been worn and washed a hundred times, do they? It is like they are sharing your life story. You can fake that look, but it isn’t the same. Chapman says the gradual unfolding of a relationship like this transforms our interactions with objects into something richer than simple utility. Swiss industrial analyst Walter Stahel, visiting professor at the University of Surrey, calls it the “teddy-bear factor”. No matter how ragged and worn a favourite teddy becomes, we don’t rush out and buy another one. As adults, our teddy bear connects us to our childhoods, and this protects it from obsolescence Stahel says this is what sustainable design needs to do.

It is not simply about making durable items that people want to keep. Sustainable design is a matter of properly costing the whole process of production, energy use, and disposal. “It is about the design of systems, the design of culture,” says Tim Cooper from the Centre for Sustainable Consumption at Sheffield Hallam University in Britain. He thinks sustainable design has been “surprisingly slow to take off” but says looming environmental crises and resource depletion are pushing it to the top of the agenda.

Thackara agrees. For him, the roots of impending environmental collapse can be summarized in two words: weight and speed. We are making more stuff than the planet can sustain and using vast amounts of energy moving more and more of it around ever faster. The Information Age was supposed to lighten our economies and reduce our impact on the environment, but the reverse seems to be happening. We have simply added information technology to the industrial era and hastened the developed world’s metabolism, Thackara argues.

Once you grasp that, the cure is hardly rocket science: minimize waste and energy use, stop moving stuff around so much and use people more. EZIO MANZINI, Professor of industrial design at Politecnico di Milano University, Italy, describes the process of moving to a post-throwaway society as “changing the engine of an aircraft in mid-flight’ Even so, he believes it can be done, and he is not alone.

Manzini says a crucial step would be to redesign our globalized world into what he calls the “multi-local society”. His vision is that every resource, from food to electricity generation, should as far as possible be sourced and distributed locally. These local hubs would then be connected to national and global networks to allow the most efficient use and flow of materials.

So what will post-throwaway consumerism look like? For a start, we will increasingly buy sustainably designed products. This might be as simple as installing energy-saving light bulbs, more efficient washing machines, or choosing locally produced groceries with less packaging.

We will spend less on material goods and more on services. Instead of buying a second car, for example, we might buy into a car-sharing network. We will also buy less and rent a whole lot more: why own things that you hardly use, especially things that are likely to be updated all the time? Consumer durables will be sold with plans already in place for their disposal. Electronic goods will be designed to be recyclable, with the extra cost added to the retail price as prepayment. As consumers become increasingly concerned about the environment, many big businesses are eagerly adopting sustainable design and brushing up their green credentials to please their customers and stay one step ahead of the competition.

Câu 1–5 — Choose the correct letter, A, B, C or D

  1. What does ‘conscience time’ imply in paragraph 2?
  2. Prior to mass production, people own things to show
  3. The word ‘narrative’ in paragraph 3 refers to
  4. Without a personal connection, people buy new stuff for
  5. The writer quotes the old jeans and teddy bear to illustrate that

Câu 6–9 — Complete the summary using the list of words, A–H

Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Complete the summary using the list of words, A-H, below. Write the correct letter, A-H, in boxes 6-9 on your answer sheet. Con ghi CHỮ CÁI, không viết từ. Khung 8 từ: A properly · B energy · C locally · D economy · E slowly · F speed · G quickly · H metabolism.

Tim Cooper claims that although sustainable design proceeds (6) the coming problems are pushing the move. In accordance with Tim Cooper, Thackara believes that the origins of the looming environmental crises are weight and (7) . The technology which was assumed to have a positive effect on our society actually accelerates the world’s (8) . To cure this, Manzini proposes a ‘multi-local society’ which means every resource should be located and redeployed (9) .

Câu 10–13 — YES / NO / NOT GIVEN

Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Do the following statements agree with the claims of the writer in Reading Passage?

  1. People often buy things that are seldom used and throw them away.
  2. In a post-throwaway society, we will pay extra money after disposing of electronic goods.
  3. Some businesses have jumped on the sustainability bandwagon.
  4. Company will spend less on repairs in the future.

Nghe — Theatre trip to Munich

Mầm 3

  1. Làm gì: Nghe băng Theatre trip to Munich một lượt duy nhất, vừa nghe vừa làm 10 câu.
  2. Bao nhiêu câu: 10 ô chấm điểm — đúng 5 ô (50%) là đạt

Câu 1–5 — Choose the correct letter, A, B or C

Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Choose the correct letter, A, B or C. Bài này là một người nói thông báo kế hoạch, nên các con số và các phương án sai đều được nhắc tới — nghe đến chỗ chốt mới chọn.

  1. When the group meet at the airport they will have
  2. The group will be met at Munich Airport by
  3. How much will they pay per night for a double room at the hotel?
  4. What type of restaurant will they go to on Tuesday evening?
  5. Who will they meet on Wednesday afternoon?

Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: What does the man say about the play on each of the following days? Choose FIVE answers from the box and write the correct letter, A-G, next to Questions 6-10.

Bảy câu để chọn (A–G)

  1. The playwright will be present.
  2. The play was written to celebrate an anniversary.
  3. The play will be performed inside a historic building.
  4. The play will be accompanied by live music.

  5. Monday

Shadowing — Can you spot a lie?

Mầm 4

3:26 Richard Wiseman: Liars in general say less. They tend to have a longer
3:31 what's called response latency, which is the time between
3:34 the end of the question and the beginning of the answer.
3:37 And there also tends to be an emotional distance in the lie – so
3:41 the words 'me', 'my', 'I' – all those things
3:44 tend to drop away in lies and it's
3:47 much much harder for liars to control
3:49 what they're saying and how they're
3:51 saying it, so focus your attention there,
3:53 you become a better lie detector.
3:56 Rob: Some good advice from Richard Wiseman. So to detect lies
4:01 we need to listen out for the response latency – a term
4:04 used in psychology to describe
4:06 the time taken between a stimulus or question and a response to it.
4:11 The bigger the gap, the more chance there is that someone is lying.
4:15 Is that a good summary, Sam?
4:17 Sam: Sort of, Rob. Richard also suggests
4:21 we focus on – or concentrate on – what
4:24 and how people are saying things too.

3. Nghe rõ giọng con: máy tách được giọng con khỏi tiếng băng.
4. Ba chỗ phát âm của chính đoạn này: latency (trọng âm la) · psychology (p đầu không đọc) · concentrate (trọng âm con).

Vì sao hôm nay chọn đúng tập này. Unit 12 con đang ôn là The law and crime, và tập này nói về cách nhận ra người nói dối — cùng một trường nghĩa với evidence · witness · proof con vừa ôn ở mầm 1. Và nó nối thẳng vào mầm 5: câu 2 của Part 3 hôm nay hỏi “Is it always easy to tell whether someone is being honest?” Hai cụm dùng lại được: response latency · focus your attention on.

Nói & Viết

Mầm 5

Nên đừng mở đầu bằng “In my family…”; mở bằng “I think most people…” rồi mới lấy một ví dụ.

A. NÓI — Part 3

Part 3 (4 câu thảo luận, mỗi câu 30–45 giây)

  1. Why do you think some people break small rules even when they agree with them?
  2. Is it always easy to tell whether someone is being honest? Why?
  3. Some people say that a community keeps order better than the police can. Do you agree?
  4. How should a city decide which rules are worth enforcing strictly?

Ba cụm nên cố dùng: there’s no real evidence either way · most people would just look the other way · I’d say it depends how serious it is.

The table below shows the average number of days taken to resolve a case in the courts of City A, by type of case, in 2016, 2019 and 2022. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Average number of days taken to resolve a case in the courts of City A, by type of case

Type of case 2016 2019 2022
Small claims 95 70 48
Housing disputes 120 105 88
Contract disputes 150 130 112
Traffic offences 30 38 52

Số liệu dùng cho bài luyện tập.

Dàn ý Task 1 và tiêu chí chấm

Mở bài viết lại đề bằng chữ của con (đừng chép đề) · Một câu tổng quan: ba loại giảm, một loại tăng · Thân 1: ba loại giảm, gọi tên loại giảm mạnh nhất theo tỉ lệ · Thân 2: loại đi ngược và phép so sánh khoảng cách.
2. Task 1 KHÔNG nêu ý kiến riêng và không đoán nguyên nhân: đề chỉ cho con mười hai con số, nên viết “the courts hired more judges” là viết thêm thứ bảng không nói.
Ví dụ “The only exception was traffic offences, which rose steadily over the period.”
