It is frequently claimed that the widespread use of smartphones is harming the way people communicate in person. While I accept that these devices can sometimes get in the way of real conversation, I largely disagree with the idea that they are damaging face-to-face communication overall.
There is some truth to the concern. In many social settings, it is now common to see friends or family members glued to their screens rather than talking to one another, and a constant stream of notifications can certainly interrupt meaningful interaction. Over time, some people, particularly the young, may become so accustomed to texting that they feel less comfortable with spontaneous conversation.
Nevertheless, I would argue that smartphones have, on balance, enriched rather than weakened communication. These devices allow us to stay in close contact with friends and relatives who live far away — people we would otherwise rarely speak to at all. Moreover, the problem lies not with the technology itself but with how it is used: a phone left face-up during dinner is a matter of personal choice, not an inevitable consequence of ownership. With a little self-discipline, people can enjoy the benefits of instant communication without sacrificing quality time together.
In conclusion, although smartphones can occasionally distract us from those around us, I do not believe they are fundamentally harming face-to-face communication. Used sensibly, they are a powerful tool that brings people closer rather than driving them apart.

Mỗi luận điểm được PHÁT TRIỂN sâu: ý điện thoại kết nối người thân xa được mở rộng thành “people we would otherwise rarely speak to at all”; ý phản biện “the problem lies not with the technology itself but with how it is used” được minh hoạ cụ thể bằng “a phone left face-up during dinner”. Không bỏ sót phần nào của đề.
Coherence & Cohesion — 8.0
Descriptor Band 8: “sequences information and ideas logically; manages all aspects of cohesion well; uses paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately.” Mỗi đoạn một chức năng rõ: nhượng bộ → phản biện → kết luận. Cohesion “khéo” chứ không máy móc: “There is some truth to the concern” mở đoạn nhượng bộ, “Nevertheless” và “Moreover” nối ý; đặc biệt liên kết TRONG câu bằng “not… but…” và tham chiếu “these devices / it” – đúng mô tả “manages all aspects of cohesion”, không lệ thuộc từ nối đầu câu.
Lexical Resource — 8.0
Descriptor Band 8: “uses a wide resource fluently and flexibly; skilful use of less common lexical items; only occasional inaccuracies.” Bài dùng less common collocation chính xác: “glued to their screens”, “a constant stream of notifications”, “spontaneous conversation”, “on balance”, “an inevitable consequence of ownership”. Đây là các cụm tự nhiên, đặt đúng ngữ cảnh – đúng mô tả “skilful use of less common items”, không phải từ “đao to búa lớn” nhồi vào.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy — 8.0
Descriptor Band 8: “uses a wide range of structures; the majority of sentences are error-free; makes only occasional errors.” Câu đa dạng và chính xác: mệnh đề quan hệ “who live far away”, cấu trúc “so accustomed to… that…”, so sánh “enriched rather than weakened”, danh động từ “without sacrificing quality time”. Cấu trúc phức nhưng gần như không lỗi.
Ý “vàng” luôn dùng được: vấn đề không nằm ở công nghệ mà ở cách con người dùng nó (“not the technology itself but how it is used”). Đây là lập luận sắc bén, áp dụng cho hầu hết đề về mạng xã hội, Internet, AI.
