Ngày 18 — Health and fitness
A. ĐIỀN VÀO ĐOẠN VĂN (12 câu)
clinic · cure · disease · dose · examine · fever · illness · infection · prescription · rash · remedy · ward
When Mai woke up on Monday her throat was sore and her temperature was thirty-nine degrees. Her mother said the (1) had come on very suddenly, and drove her to the small (2) at the end of our street rather than wait a week for an appointment at the health centre. The doctor asked Mai to sit down so that he could (3) her properly. He found a red (4) across her neck and shoulders, which Mai had not even noticed, and he explained that the high (5) was simply the body fighting back. It was nothing serious, he said — not a (6) she could pass on to the whole class, just an (7) in her throat that had got out of hand. He wrote her a (8) for some antibiotics and said the (9) was two tablets, three times a day, after meals. He also suggested an old family (10) : honey in warm water, as often as she liked. There is no instant (11) for a throat like that, he admitted, but a week in bed usually does the job. The patients who end up on a hospital (12) are the ones who ignore it for a month.

Paul Nash, the elder son of William Nash and his first wife, Caroline Jackson, was born in London on 11th May 1889. His father was a successful lawyer who became the Recorder of Abingdon. According to Ronald Blythe: “In 1901 the family returned to its native Buckinghamshire , where the garden of Wood Lane House at Iver Heath, and the countryside of the Chiltern Hills, with its sculptural beeches and chalky contours, were early influences on the development of the three children. Their lives were overshadowed by their mother’s mental illness and Nash himself was greatly helped by his nurse who, with some elderly neighbors, introduced him to the universe of plants.”
Nash was educated at St. Paul’s School and the Slade School of Art, where he met Dora Carrington. Unlike some of his contemporaries at the Slade School, Nash remained untouched by the two post-impressionist exhibitions organized by Roger Fry in 1910 and 1912. Instead, he was influenced by the work of William Blake. He also became a close friend of Gordon Bottomley, who took a keen interest in his career.
Nash had his first one-man show, of ink and wash drawings, at the Carfax Gallery in 1912. The following year he shared an exhibition at the Dorian Leigh Gallery with his brother, John Nash. Myfanwy Piper has added: “Nash had a noteworthy sense of order and of the niceties of presentation; his pictures were beautifully framed, drawings mounted, his studio precisely and decoratively tidy, and oddments which he collected were worked up into compositions.”
Paul Nash was strongly attracted to Dora Carrington: He later recalled: “Carrington… was the dominating personality, I got an introduction to her and eventually won her regard by lending her my braces for a fancy-dress party. We were on the top of a bus and she wanted them then and there.”
On the outbreak Nash considered the possibility of joining the British Army. He told a friend: “I am not keen to rush off and be a soldier. The whole damnable war is too horrible of course and I am all against killing anybody, speaking off-hand, but besides all that I believe both Jack and I might be more useful as ambulance and red cross men, and to that end we are training. Nash enlisted in the Artists’ Rifles. He told Gordon Bottomley: “I have joined the Artists’ London Regiment of Territorials, the old Corps which started with Rossetti, Leighton, and Millais as members in 1860. Every man must do his bit in this horrible business so I have given up painting. There are many nice creatures in my company and I enjoy the burst of exercise – marching, drilling all day in the open air about the pleasant parts of Regents Park and Hampstead Heath.”
In March 1917 he was sent to the Western Front Nash, who took part in the offensive at Ypres, had reached the rank of lieutenant in the Hampshire Regiment by 1916. Whenever possible, Nash made sketches of life in the trenches. In May 1917 he was invalided home after a non-military accident. While recuperating in London, Nash worked from his sketches to produce a series of war paintings . This work was well-received when exhibited later that year. As a result of this exhibition, Charles Masterman, head of the government’s War Propaganda Bureau (WPB), and the advice of Edward Marsh and William Rothenstein, it was decided to recruit Nash as a war artist. In November 1917 in the immediate aftermath of the battle of Passchendaele Nash returned to France.
Nash was unhappy with his work as a member of the War Propaganda Bureau. He wrote at the time: “I am no longer an artist. I am a messenger who will bring back word from the men who are fighting to those who want the war to go on forever. Feeble, inarticulate will be my message, but it will have a bitter truth and may burn their lousy souls.” However, as Myfanwy Piper has pointed out: “The drawings he made then, of shorn trees in ruined and flooded landscapes, were the works that made Nash’s reputation. They were shown at the Leicester Galleries in 1918 together with his first efforts at oil painting, in which he was self-taught and quickly successful, though his drawings made in the field had a more immediate public impact.
In 1919 Nash moved to Dymchurch in Kent, beginning his well-known series of pictures of the sea, the breakwaters, and the long wall that prevents the sea from flooding Romney Marsh. This included the Winter Sea and Dymchurch Steps. Nash also painted the landscapes of the Chiltern Hills. In 1924 and 1928 he had successful exhibitions at the Leicester Galleries. Despite this popular acclaim in 1929, his work became more abstract. In 1933 Nash founded Unit One, the group of experimental painters, sculptors, and architects.
During the Second World War Nash was employed by the Ministry of Information and the Air Ministry and paintings produced by him during this period include the Battle of Britain and Totes Meer. His biographer, Myfanwy Piper, has argued: “This war disturbed Nash but did not change his art as the last one had. His style and his habits were formed, and in the new war, he treated his new subjects as he had treated those he had been thinking about for so long. His late paintings, both oils, and watercolors are alternately brilliant and somber in color with the light of setting suns and rising moons spreading over wooded and hilly landscapes. “Paul Nash died at 35 Boscombe Spa Road, Bournemouth, on 11th July 1946.
Câu 1–4 — Choose the correct letter, A–G (chọn BỐN)
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Choose the correct letter, A-G. Write your answers in boxes 1-4 on your answer sheet. What four statements are correct concerning Nash’s story?
Bảy phát biểu để chọn (A–G)
- He did not make an effort after becoming a high-ranking official in the army.
- He had a dream since his childhood.
- He once temporarily ceased his painting career for some reason.
- He was not affected by certain shows attractive to his other peers.
- He had cooperation in art with his relative.
- Some of his paintings were presented in a chaotic way.
- His achievement after being enlisted in the army did not as much attention as his previous works.
-
I am no longer an artist. I am a messenger…”
-
C — đoạn E: Every man must do his bit in this horrible business so I have given up painting.
-
D — đoạn B: Unlike some of his contemporaries at the Slade School, Nash remained untouched by the two post-impressionist exhibitions organized by Roger Fry. certain shows = hai cuộc triển lãm đó; his other peers = his contemporaries.
-
E — đoạn C: he shared an exhibition at the Dorian Leigh Gallery with his brother, John Nash. relative = brother.
Câu 5–10 — Which paragraph contains the following information?
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Write the correct letter A-I, in boxes 5-10 on your answer sheet. Which paragraph contains the following information? NB You may use any letter more than once.
- a charming lady in Nash’s eyes
D — cả đoạn D nói về Dora Carrington: Paul Nash was strongly attracted to Dora Carrington, và ông kể Carrington… was the dominating personality. a charming lady in Nash’s eyes = người ông thấy hấp dẫn.
- Nash’s passion for following particularly appreciated artists
B — đoạn B: he was influenced by the work of William Blake và ông kết bạn thân với Gordon Bottomley. particularly appreciated artists = những hoạ sĩ ông đặc biệt trọng.
- Nash’s works with contrast elements
I — đoạn I: tranh cuối đời alternately brilliant and somber in color with the light of setting suns and rising moons — sáng và tối đứng cạnh nhau, đúng nghĩa contrast elements.
- the true cause for Nash to join the military service
E — đoạn E: ông nói rõ lý do thật: I believe both Jack and I might be more useful as ambulance and red cross men, và Every man must do his bit.
- the noticeable impact on Nash’s growth exerted from the rearing environment
A — đoạn A: khu vườn Wood Lane House và vùng Chiltern Hills là early influences on the development of the three children, và bà bảo mẫu introduced him to the universe of plants. rearing environment = môi trường ông được nuôi lớn.
- high praise for Nash’s unique taste of presenting his works
C — đoạn C: Nash had a noteworthy sense of order and of the niceties of presentation — đúng chữ high praise (lời khen) cho taste of presenting his works (cách ông trình bày tranh).
Câu 11–13 — Answer the questions (NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS)
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Answer the questions below. Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each answer.
- Because of a popular display of Nash’s works created in the army, what did his leader designate him as?
a war artist — đoạn F: triển lãm tranh chiến tranh được đón nhận tốt, As a result of this exhibition… it was decided to recruit Nash as a war artist. Máy nhận cả war artist (bỏ a) vì giới hạn là ba từ.
- How did Nash learn oil painting?
self-taught — đoạn G: his first efforts at oil painting, in which he was self-taught and quickly successful. Máy nhận cả self taught (không gạch nối).
- What change took place for Nash’s painting style in the late second decade of the twentieth century?
more abstract — đoạn H: Despite this popular acclaim in 1929, his work became more abstract. the late second decade of the twentieth century = cuối những năm 1920.
|---|---|---|
| well-received | được đón nhận tốt | This work was well-received when exhibited later that year. (đoạn F) |
| in the immediate aftermath of | ngay sau khi … xảy ra | In November 1917 in the immediate aftermath of the battle of Passchendaele Nash returned to France. (đoạn F) |
| popular acclaim | sự tán thưởng của công chúng | Despite this popular acclaim in 1929, his work became more abstract. (đoạn H) |
| became more abstract | chuyển sang trừu tượng hơn | Despite this popular acclaim in 1929, his work became more abstract. (đoạn H) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | a charming lady | |
| 6 | particularly appreciated artists | |
| 7 | contrast elements | |
| 8 | the true cause to join the military service | |
| 9 | the rearing environment | |
| 10 | unique taste of presenting his works |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | the dominating personality | D |
| 6 | influenced by the work of William Blake | B |
| 7 | alternately brilliant and somber in color | I |
| 8 | might be more useful as ambulance and red cross men | E |
| 9 | early influences on the development of the three children | A |
| 10 | a noteworthy sense of order and of the niceties of presentation | C |
Chỉ mở sau khi con đã tự điền cả sáu hàng. Hàng 8 đáng nhất: câu hỏi nói the true cause (nguyên nhân thật), và bài trả lời đúng chỗ ấy ở đoạn E — còn đoạn F kể chuyện sau khi đã nhập ngũ, rất dễ nhặt nhầm.
Nghe — The issue of waste
Mầm 3
- Làm gì: Nghe băng The issue of waste một lượt duy nhất, vừa nghe vừa làm 10 câu.
Câu 1–4 — Answer the questions (NO MORE THAN ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER)
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Answer the questions below. Write NO MORE THAN ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.
- Where was a Stone Age rubbish dump found?
Norway — băng: a huge Stone Age mound was identified some years ago in Norway as waste disposal.
- In Medieval times, what type of waste was most common?
organic — băng: this waste, apart from broken pottery and a few metal objects, was largely organic. most common = largely. throw it out of the window là cách xử lý, không phải loại rác.
- What did science link with waste?
disease — băng: science produced convincing evidence of the connection between rubbish and disease. link = connection.
- Which invention is the biggest problem for the environment?
plastic — băng: the invention of plastic has caused the worst headache for the environment. biggest problem = worst headache.
Câu 5–7 — List THREE factors which led to the increase in waste
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: List THREE factors which led to the increase in waste. Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS for each answer.
mass manufacturing — băng: As many countries became industrialised, we saw the advent of mass manufacturing.
packaging — băng: Closely related to this is packaging — necessary for transporting things around the world, but then extremely difficult to get rid of properly. Tối đa hai từ, nên chỉ cần một từ này.
- Yếu tố thứ ba
disposable goods — băng: And a third aspect to the problem has been disposable goods. Đây là chỗ người nói đếm a third, nên nó là yếu tố thứ ba.
Câu 8–10 — Which country uses the highest proportion of each method?
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Which country uses the highest proportion of each method of waste disposal? Choose your answers from the box and write the letters A-F next to questions 8-10.
Sáu nước để chọn (A–F)
- Denmark
- Germany
- Japan
- Switzerland
- UK
- USA
- incineration
C Japan — băng: The UK burns relatively little waste, as does the US, while Denmark burns about half of all waste, and Japan uses this method for as much as three quarters.
- landfill
E UK — băng: this method is the dominant process used in the UK at over 80%, and is also heavily used in Germany and in the US. heavily used không bằng dominant … over 80%.
- recycling
D Switzerland — băng: The UK and Japan have rather poor records in recycling, while Switzerland tops the table in this respect. tops the table = đứng đầu.
|---|---|---|
| broad brush strokes | nói một cách rất khái quát | These are broad brush strokes, of course, because an important issue is how efficient and clean the burning process is. |
| tops the table | đứng đầu bảng về mặt đó | while Switzerland tops the table in this respect |
| spare little thought for | chẳng mấy khi nghĩ đến | And yet we spare little thought for where they go when we do discard them. |
| it must be said that | cũng phải nói rằng (câu rào trước khi nêu mặt khác) | It must be said that much depends here on whether further waste is generated by the recycling processes themselves. |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | rubbish dump | |
| 5 | factors | |
| 8 | the highest proportion | |
| 9 | method of disposal |
Transcript
Lecturer: Good afternoon, everybody. Today I'll be talking about the issue of waste, which has become an immense problem in today's society. We face huge challenges in terms of reducing its creation in the first place and then in dealing with it when it has been created. Now, the model of nature would be our ideal – a completely cyclical system in which no excess waste is generated that can't be processed by itself. However, we humans have proved, despite our apparent intelligence and ingenuity, quite incapable of achieving this. Where did it all go wrong? We have evidence that in ancient Greece and Rome governments operated municipal waste collection, and a huge Stone Age mound was identified some years ago in Norway as waste disposal , so we can see that people have been generating waste for a very long time indeed. However, during the Dark Ages, sophisticated municipal waste processing disappeared. The medieval answer to waste was to throw it out of the window. But this waste, apart from broken pottery and a few metal objects , was largely organic .
This meant, of course, that it was quickly absorbed into the environment by the natural processes of decay . However, many concerned people, such as doctors, claimed that this created health problems, although it wasn't until science produced convincing evidence of the connection between rubbish and disease that governments began to see the importance of dealing with the problem effectively.
Unfortunately, their response has remained slower than the generation of waste. It is very hard to deal with waste that won't melt into the environment, as so many of our modern consumer goods won't, and that's why the invention of plastic has caused the worst headache for the environment – it's more than nature can deal with.
In order to address the root of the problem of waste, we need to think about what has made the quantity of waste accelerate in growth. I'd identify three main reasons. As many countries became industrialised , we saw the advent of mass manufacturing . This has been enormously damaging as it has greatly increased the amount of things on the planet's surface which don't go away by themselves.
Closely related to this is packaging – necessary for transporting things around the world, but then extremely difficult to get rid of properly.
And a third aspect to the problem has been disposable goods . We have become accustomed to so many things being to use and then discard that we find it hard to imagine life without them. And yet we spare little thought for where they go when we do discard them.
Right now, let's move on from where all this waste comes from to what is done with it all now it's here. Different countries deal with waste differently. Of course, each country also changes what it does, so the figures for waste treatment I've got here are likely to change in the future. Let's look at Municipal Solid Waste, or MSW. MSW is important to consider because it's effectively a measurement of consumerism – how much waste people produce that goes beyond the absolute basic requirements in life to eat and drink.
One of the main ways of dealing with MSW is incineration -burning it. This is adopted variously around the world. The UK burns relatively little waste, as does the US , while Denmark burns about half of all waste, and Japan uses this method for as much as three quarters .
These are broad brush strokes, of course, because an important issue is how efficient and clean the burning process is. Another major form of waste treatment is using landfill sites – basically, burying the waste in the earth. Currently, this method is the dominant process used in the UK at over 80%. and is also heavily used in Germany and in the US , while densely populated and mountainous countries such as Switzerland and Japan dispose of relatively little this way.
A third – and much better way of dealing with waste is to recycle it, turning it back into more things we need. It must be said that much depends here on whether further waste is generated by the recycling processes themselves. The UK and Japan have rather poor records in recycling, while Switzerland tops the table in this respect , and reasonably impressive levels are achieved by Denmark and Germany . I really hope that if we all gathered here again ten years from now, these figures would be much higher. Time – and a lot of effort – will tell.
Bài học rút ra: ở nhóm liệt kê, người nói tự đếm cho con — I’d identify three main reasons, rồi Closely related to this…, rồi a third aspect.
Shadowing — Are you getting enough exercise?
|---|---|
| 4:25 | Rob: Well, I might just run on the spot while |
| 4:28 | we go over the new vocabulary we've learned |
| 4:31 | today! |
| 4:32 | Neil: Good plan. First up we heard 'vigorous' |
| 4:34 | – which means using a lot of energy to do |
| 4:37 | something. |
| 4:38 | Rob: OK. "I am running vigorously on the |
| 4:42 | spot!" |
| 4:43 | Neil: Great example! And good to see you taking |
| 4:47 | some vigorous exercise! Number two – 'saunter' |
| 4:50 | – means to walk slowly in a relaxed way. |
| 4:53 | "When I saw Rob, I sauntered over to say |
| 4:55 | hello." |
| 4:56 | Rob: Hi Neil. Number three – 'brisk' |
| 4:59 | means quick and energetic. |
| 5:02 | Neil: "It's important to take some brisk |
| 5:04 | exercise every day." |
| 5:05 | Rob: Yes! And I'm beginning to realise that |
| 5:08 | might be true. |
| 5:09 | Neil: Yep! I think you've done enough jogging |
| 5:11 | for today, Rob. You've probably done about |
| 5:13 | a hundred steps. |
| 5:14 | Rob: Is that all? OK, number four – if you |
| 5:17 | 'build something into something' – you |
| 5:20 | include it from the beginning. |
| 5:21 | Neil: "It's important to build regular |
| 5:24 | exercise into your daily routine." |
| 5:26 | Rob: Very good advice. Number five is 'incrementally' |
| 5:29 | which means gradually increasing in size. |
Chú ý sauntered: au đọc như or, đuôi -ed đọc /d/ nhẹ.
Bước 4 — chặng 3 (5:14 → 5:32). build something into something và incrementally. incrementally: năm âm tiết, trọng âm ở cre.
Và nó nối thẳng vào mầm 5: hai câu mẫu “It’s important to take some brisk exercise every day.” và “It’s important to build regular exercise into your daily routine.” dùng được ngay ở Part 3 và Task 2 hôm nay — con chỉ đổi chủ ngữ là thành câu của mình.
Nên đừng mở đầu bằng “In my family…”; mở bằng “I think most people…” rồi mới lấy một ví dụ.
A. NÓI — Part 3
Part 3 (3 câu thảo luận, mỗi câu 40–60 giây)
- Why do you think many people find it hard to exercise regularly?
- Should schools spend more time on physical education than they do now?
- How might attitudes to health change in your country over the next twenty years?
Ba câu trên không có chữ you theo nghĩa “bản thân con”: câu 1 hỏi many people, câu 2 hỏi schools, câu 3 hỏi your country. Con trả lời bằng AREL: một ý chính, một lý do, một ví dụ, rồi một câu chốt. Hai mẫu câu mầm 4 vừa cho sẵn dùng được ngay ở câu 1 và câu 2: “It’s important to take some brisk exercise every day.” và “It’s important to build regular exercise into your daily routine.”
Some people believe that governments should be responsible for keeping people healthy, rather than individuals themselves. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Write at least 250 words.
5. Dùng lại từ mầm 1 và mầm 4: vigorous · brisk · build … into · incrementally — và nhớ đây là bài trang trọng, nên đừng viết “I’m gonna…”.
