Phần G ÔN LẠI bộ từ The law and crime của Unit 12 — lần thứ ba.
A. PHẦN IN ĐẬM ĐÚNG HAY SAI (10 câu)

Bài: Rainwater Harvesting — 1025 từ, 10 đoạn mang nhãn A–J. Bài mở đầu bằng một đoạn không mang nhãn: For two years southern Sri Lanka suffered a prolonged drought, described by locals as “the worst in 50 years”. Some areas didn’t see a successful crop for four or five consecutive seasons. Livestock died, water in wells dropped to dangerously low levels, children were increasingly malnourished and school attendance has fallen. An estimated 1.6 million people were affected. Mười đoạn A–J nằm ngay dưới.
Muthukandiya is a village in Moneragala district, one of the drought-stricken areas in the “dry zone” of southern Sri Lanka, where half the country’s population of 18 million lives. Rainfall in the area varies greatly from year to year, often bringing extreme dry spells in between monsoons. But this drought was much worse than usual. Despite some rain in November, only half of Moneragala’s 1,400 tube wells were in working order by March. The drought devastated supplies of rice and freshwater fish, the staple diet of inland villages. Many local industries closed down and villagers headed for the towns in search of work.
The villagers of muthukandiya arrived in the 1970s as part of a government resettlement scheme. Each family was given six acres of land, with no irrigation system. Because crop production, which relies entirely on rainfall, is insufficient to support most families, the village economy relies on men and women working as day-laborers in nearby sugar-cane plantations. Three wells have been dug to provide domestic water, but these run dry for much of the year. Women and children may spend several hours each day walking up to three miles (five kilometers) to fetch water for drinking, washing, and cooking.
In 1998, communities in the district discussed water problems with Practical Action South Asia. What followed was a drought mitigation initiative based on a low-cost “rainwater harvesting” technology already used in Sri Lanka and elsewhere in the region. It uses tanks to collect and store rain channeled by gutters and pipes as it runs off the roofs of houses.
Despite an indigenous tradition of rain-water harvesting and irrigation systems going back to the third century BC, policy-makers in modern times have often overlooked the value of such technologies, and it is only recently that officials have taken much interest in household-level structures. Government and other programmes have, however, been top-down in their conception and application, installing tanks free of charge without providing training in the skills needed to build and maintain them properly. Practical Action South Asia’s project deliberately took a different approach, aiming to build up a local skills base among builders and users of the tanks, and to create structures and systems so that communities can manage their own rainwater harvesting schemes.
The community of Muthukandiya was involved throughout. Two meetings were held where villagers analysed their water problems, developed a mitigation plan and selected the rainwater harvesting technology. Two local masons received several days’ on-the-job training in building the 5,000-litre household storage tanks: surface tanks out of Ferro-cement and underground tanks out of brick. Each system, including tank, pipes, gutters and filters, cost US$195 – equivalent to a month’s income for an average village family. Just over half the cost was provided by the community, in the form of materials and unskilled labour. Practical Action South Asia contributed the rest, including cement, transport and payment for the skilled labour. Households learned how to use and maintain the tanks, and the whole community was trained to keep domestic water supplies clean. A village rainwater harvesting society was set up to run the project. To date, 37 families in and around Muthukandiya have storage tanks. Evaluations show clearly that households with rainwater storage tanks have considerably more water for domestic needs than households relying entirely on wells and ponds. During the driest months, households with tanks may have up to twice as much water available. Their water is much cleaner, too.
Nandawathie, a widow in the village, has taken full advantage of the opportunities that rainwater harvesting has brought her family. With a better water supply now close at hand, she began by growing a few vegetables. The income from selling these helped her to open a small shop on her doorstep. This increased her earnings still further, enabling her to apply for a loan to install solar power in her house. She is now thinking of building another tank in her garden so that she can grow more vegetables. Nandawathie also feels safer now that she no longer has to fetch water from the village well in the early morning or late evening. She says that her children no longer complain so much of diarrhoea. And her daughter Sandamalee has more time for school work.
In the short term, and on a small scale, the project has clearly been a success. The challenge lies in making such initiatives sustainable and expanding their coverage. At a purely technical level, rainwater harvesting is evidently sustainable. In Muthukandiya, the skills required to build and maintain storage tanks were taught fairly easily and can be shared by the two trained masons, who are now finding work with other development agencies in the district.
The non-structural elements of the work, especially it’s financial and organizational, present a bigger challenge. A revolving fund was set up, with households that had already benefited agreeing to contribute a small monthly amount to pay for maintenance, repairs and new tanks. However, it appears that the revolving fund concept was not fully understood and it has proved difficult to get households to contribute. Recovering costs from interventions that do not generate income directly will always be a difficult proposition, although this can be overcome if the process is explained more fully at the outset.
The Muthkandiya initiative was planned as a demonstration project, to show that community-based drought mitigation through rainwater harvesting was feasible. Several other organizations have begun their own projects using the same approach. The feasibility of introducing larger tanks is being investigated.
However, a lot of effort and patience are needed to generate the interest, develop the skills and organize the management structures needed to implement sustainable community-based projects. It will probably be some time before rainwater harvesting technologies can spread rapidly and spontaneously across the district’s villages, without external support.
Câu 1–6 — Answer the questions below
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Answer the questions below. Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each answer.
- What is the major way for local people to make a living in Muthukandiya village?
Crop production — đoạn B: Because crop production, which relies entirely on rainfall, is insufficient to support most families. Hai từ — đừng viết cả cụm crop production which relies on rainfall.
- Where can adult workers make extra money from in daytime?
sugar-cane plantations — đoạn B: men and women working as day-laborers in nearby sugar-cane plantations.
- What has been dug to supply water for daily household life?
three wells — đoạn B: Three wells have been dug to provide domestic water. Bài dùng đúng chữ dug của câu hỏi.
- In which year did the plan of a new project to lessen the effect of drought begin?
1998 — đoạn C: In 1998, communities in the district discussed water problems with Practical Action South Asia. Đây là ô MỘT SỐ — đúng chữ AND/OR A NUMBER của đầu bài.
- Where do the gutters and pipes collect rainwater from?
roofs of houses — đoạn C: rain channeled by gutters and pipes as it runs off the roofs of houses. Ba từ, vừa đúng mức tối đa.
- What helps the family obtain more water for domestic needs than those relying on only wells and ponds?
rainwater storage tanks — đoạn E: households with rainwater storage tanks have considerably more water for domestic needs than households relying entirely on wells and ponds.
Câu 7–13 — YES / NO / NOT GIVEN
Đầu bài của nhóm này viết “the information given”, nhưng ba ô để chọn lại là YES / NO / NOT GIVEN. Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Do the following statements agree with the information given in Reading Passage 1? In boxes 7-13 on your answer sheet, write YES if the statement is true, NO if the statement is false, NOT GIVEN if the information is not given in the passage. NO là bài nói ngược lại; NOT GIVEN là bài không trả lời câu đang hỏi. Hai ô khó nhất hôm nay — 7 và 13 — đều là NOT GIVEN kiểu mọi chữ đều có trong bài, chỉ điều câu hỏi khẳng định là không có.
- Most of the government’s actions and other programs have somewhat failed.
NOT GIVEN — đoạn D có phê chương trình của nhà nước: top-down in their conception and application, installing tanks free of charge without providing training.
- Masons were trained for the constructing parts of the rainwater harvesting system.
YES — đoạn E: Two local masons received several days’ on-the-job training in building the 5,000-litre household storage tanks.
- The cost of rainwater harvesting systems was shared by local villagers and the local government.
- Tanks increase both the amount and quality of the water for domestic use.
YES — đoạn E nói cả hai: considerably more water for domestic needs (lượng) và Their water is much cleaner, too (chất). Câu nào có chữ both thì phải tìm đủ hai chỗ mới chọn YES.
- To send her daughter to school, a widow had to work for a job in a rainwater harvesting scheme.
NO — đoạn F: Nandawathie trồng rau rồi mở một cửa hàng nhỏ, con gái has more time for school work. Bài không nói bà phải đi làm cho một dự án hứng nước mưa để cho con đi học — bà hưởng lợi từ dự án, không làm việc cho dự án.
- Households benefited began to pay part of the maintenance or repairs.
YES — đoạn H: A revolving fund was set up, with households that had already benefited agreeing to contribute a small monthly amount to pay for maintenance, repairs and new tanks.
- Training two masons at the same time is much more preferable to training a single one.
NOT GIVEN — đoạn G có nói hai thợ được dạy và nay finding work with other development agencies, nhưng bài không hề so sánh dạy hai thợ với dạy một thợ. Đây là NOT GIVEN kiểu khó: mọi chữ trong câu đều có trong bài, chỉ phép so sánh là không có.
|---|---|---|
| drought-stricken | bị hạn hán hoành hành | one of the drought-stricken areas in the “dry zone” of southern Sri Lanka |
| consecutive seasons | các vụ mùa liên tiếp | Some areas didn’t see a successful crop for four or five consecutive seasons |
| malnourished | suy dinh dưỡng | children were increasingly malnourished and school attendance has fallen |
| a government resettlement scheme | một chương trình tái định cư của nhà nước | The villagers of muthukandiya arrived in the 1970s as part of a government resettlement scheme |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | What is the major way for local people to make a living? (tối đa 3 từ) | |
| 2 | Where can adult workers make extra money from in daytime? (tối đa 3 từ) | |
| 3 | What has been dug to supply water for daily household life? (tối đa 3 từ) | |
| 4 | In which year did the plan of a new project begin? (tối đa 3 từ, hoặc một số) | |
| 5 | Where do the gutters and pipes collect rainwater from? (tối đa 3 từ) | |
| 6 | What helps the family obtain more water than those relying on only wells and ponds?
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crop production | B |
| 2 | sugar-cane plantations | B |
| 3 | three wells | B |
| 4 | 1998 | C |
| 5 | roofs of houses | C |
| 6 | rainwater storage tanks | E |
Nghe — Ethnography in business
Mầm 3
- Làm gì: Nghe băng Ethnography in business một lượt duy nhất, vừa nghe vừa làm 10 câu.
Câu 1–10 — Complete the notes
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Complete the notes below. Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer.
Băng: providing valuable information about their attitudes towards existing products.
Băng: although the measuring cups had numbers inside them, the cooks couldn’t see these easily.
Băng: they were eager to know how much time they’d spent on the call so far.
Băng: the team came up with an idea for software that would help them to do this.
Băng: the nurses needed to access the computer records of their patients, no matter where they were.
Băng: a study aiming at tracking the emotions of passengers during a flight.
Băng: the researchers may select them according to their income.
Băng: they have to be comfortable talking about themselves and being watched.
Băng: the research is usually based on first-hand observation of what they are doing at the time.
Băng: 70 to 80 per cent of their time is spent not on the collecting of data but on its analysis.
|---|---|---|
| first-hand observation | quan sát trực tiếp, tận mắt | the research is usually based on first-hand observation of what they are doing at the time |

| compelling insights | những phát hiện thuyết phục | This can result in some compelling insights |
| feed back to the whole design process | quay trở lại đóng góp cho cả quá trình thiết kế | compelling insights that can in turn feed back to the whole design process |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | numbers | |
| 3 | time | |
| 5 | patients | |
| 8 | comfortable | |
| 10 | analysis |
Transcript
So what I’m going to talk about to you today is something called Ethnography. This is a type of research aimed at exploring the way human cultures work. It was first developed for use in anthropology, and it’s also been used in sociology and communication studies. So what’s it
got to do with business, you may ask. Well, businesses are finding that ethnography can offer them deeper insight into the possible needs of customers, either present or future, as well as providing valuable information about their attitudes towards existing products. And ethnography can also help companies to design new products or services that customers really want.
Let’s look at some examples of how ethnographic research works in business. One team of researchers did a project for a company manufacturing kitchen equipment. They watched how cooks used measuring cups to measure out things like sugar and flour. They saw that
the cooks had to check and recheck the contents, because although the measuring cups had numbers inside them, the cooks couldn't see these easily. So a new design of cup was developed to overcome this problem, and it was a top seller.
Another team of ethnographic researchers looked at how cell phones were used in Uganda, in Africa. They found that people who didn’t have their own phones could pay to use the
phones of local entrepreneurs. Because these customers paid in advance for their calls, they were eager to know how much time they’d spent on the call so far. So the phone company designed phones for use globally with this added feature.
Ethnographic research has also been carried out in computer companies. In one company, IT systems administrators were observed for several weeks. It was found that a large amount of
their work involved communicating with colleagues in order to solve problems, but that they didn’t have a standard way of exchanging information from spreadsheets and so on. So the team came up with an idea for software that would help them to do this.
In another piece of research, a team observed and talked to nurses working in hospitals.
This led to the recognition that the nurses needed to access the computer records of their patients , no matter where they were. This led to the development of a portable computer tablet that allowed the nurses to check records in locations throughout the hospital.
Occasionally, research can be done even in environments where the researchers can’t be
present. For example, in one project done for an airline, respondents used their smartphones to record information during airline trips, in a study aiming at tracking the emotions of passengers during a flight.
So what makes studies like these different from ordinary research? Let’s look at some of the general principles behind ethnographic research in business. First of all, the researcher has to be completely open-minded – he or she hasn’t thought up a hypothesis to be tested, as is the case in other types of research. Instead they wait for the participants in the research to inform them. As far as choosing the participants themselves is concerned, that’s not really all that different from ordinary research – the criteria according to which the participants are chosen
may be something as simple as the age bracket they fall into, or the researchers may select them according to their income or they might try to find a set of people who all use a particular
product, for example. But it’s absolutely crucial to recruit the right people as participants. As well
as the criteria I’ve mentioned, they have to be comfortable talking about themselves and being watched as they go about their activities. Actually, most researchers say that people open up pretty easily, maybe because they’re often in their own home or workplace.
So what makes this type of research special is that it's not just a matter of sending a
questionnaire to the participants, instead the research is usually based on first-hand observation of what they are doing at the time. But that doesn’t mean that the researcher never talks to the participants. However, unlike in traditional research, in this case it’s the participant rather than the researchers who decides what direction the interview will follow. This means that there’s less likelihood of the researcher imposing his or her own ideas on the participant.
But after they’ve said goodbye to their participants and got back to their office, the
researchers’ work isn't finished. Most researchers estimate that 70 to 80 per cent of their time is spent not on the collecting of data but on its analysis – looking at photos, listening to recordings and transcribing them, and so on. The researchers may end up with hundreds of pages of notes. And to determine what's significant, they don’t focus on the sensational things or the unusual things, instead they try to identify a pattern of some sort in all this data, and to discern the meaning behind it. This can result in some compelling insights that can in turn feed back to the whole design process.
Shadowing — How important is politeness?
|---|---|
| 3:03 | Michael Rosen didn't feel that the boy was insulting him. |
| 3:06 | To insult someone means to be rude or offensive to them. |
| 3:09 | Although his speech was very informal, |
| 3:12 | Michael thought the boy was actually pleased to see him, not rude at all. |
| 3:16 | Michael was well disposed to the boy – he liked and approved of him. |
| 3:21 | So, you could say that politeness is subjective. |
| 3:24 | If Michael doesn't feel offended, then where is the offence? |
| 3:28 | Then why do we teach children to be polite at all? |
| 3:31 | Well, according to Professor Mulaney, it's to do with the rules of society. |
| 3:35 | That's right. Louise thinks that by teaching our kids politeness, |
| 3:39 | they enjoy the benefits of being accepted in society. |
| 3:43 | So, imagine how embarrassed she felt when her two-year-old daughter |
| 3:47 | repeatedly ignored the cook at her nursery school and refused to say hello. |
| 3:54 | Here's Louise Melanie telling the story to BBC Radio 4's Word of Mouth. |
| 3:59 | (Louise) The cook looked so disappointed. |
| 4:01 | And as I mention in the book, it felt to me like there were lots |
| 4:03 | of other children skipping – skipping and jumping past going hello, |
| 4:07 | being really friendly children, and my daughter was just there. |
Người dẫn giải nghĩa insult và well disposed to. Chỗ phát âm: insulting — trọng âm ở sul, khác insult (danh từ) trọng âm ở in.
3. Nghe rõ giọng con: máy tách được giọng con khỏi tiếng băng.
4. Ba chỗ phát âm của chính đoạn này: insulting (trọng âm sul) · subjective (trọng âm jec) · disappointed (trọng âm point).
Vì sao hôm nay chọn đúng tập này. Unit 13 con đang học là Modals, và sách ghi thẳng “May is more polite than could, and could is more polite than can.”
A. NÓI — Part 1
Part 1 (6 câu về bản thân, mỗi câu 20–30 giây)
- Do people in your country usually say please and thank you?
- Were you taught to be polite when you were a child? Who taught you?
- Is it ever difficult to be polite? When?
- Do you think young people today are as polite as older people?
- Are there any rules in your home that everyone has to follow?
- Is there a rule you think should be changed?
Ba cụm nên cố dùng: we’re expected to · you’re not supposed to · I was brought up to.
Many people know what the rules are but still do not follow them. Why do people break rules they agree with? What can be done to encourage people to follow rules? Write at least 250 words.
Dàn ý Task 2 và tiêu chí chấm
Mở bài viết lại đề bằng chữ của con (đừng chép đề) · Thân 1: trả lời câu hỏi 1 — vì sao người ta phá luật mà chính họ đồng ý · Thân 2: trả lời câu hỏi 2 — làm gì để người ta tuân thủ · Kết: nhắc lại cả hai câu trả lời.
3. Phải trả lời ĐỦ CẢ HAI câu: bỏ một câu là mất điểm Task Response dù bài viết hay. Viết xong, đọc lại đề và chỉ tay vào đoạn trả lời từng câu.
4. Dùng chính modal của Unit 13: must · have to · should · mustn’t · be supposed to.
5. Mỗi câu trả lời cần một ví dụ cụ thể — một luật thật mà con biết người ta hay phá (vượt đèn đỏ, xả rác, vào chỗ cấm), không viết chung chung people are lazy.
