Ngày 12 — People and society
Câu nào sai, con đọc to câu đúng một lần.
A. ĐIỀN VÀO ĐOẠN VĂN (12 câu)
Mỗi từ dùng đúng một lần. Chia đúng thì của câu.
ancient · audience · bad-tempered · blame · connection · crowd · fault · nervous · old · relationship · sensible · sensitive
My grandmother grew up in an (1) village where some of the houses were said to be four hundred years old. She still lives there, in the same (2) stone house her mother was born in. Every August the village holds a festival, and by the afternoon the square is packed; the (3) spills out into the side streets and nobody can move. In the evening everyone squeezes into the hall for a play put on by the schoolchildren, and that (4) is the noisiest I have ever sat in. My grandmother has a close (5) with almost everyone there, and she insists there is a family (6) between her and half the village if you go back far enough. Last year the lights failed in the middle of the second act. My cousin, who had wired them, got the (7) for it in front of everybody, though it turned out not to be his (8) at all — a lorry had cut a cable outside. He is quite a (9) boy and he went very quiet, while his brother, who is (10) at the best of times, shouted at the organisers for ten minutes. My grandmother did the (11) thing: she sent them both outside and finished the evening by candlelight. She told me afterwards that she had been more (12) about the candles than about either of her grandsons.

Katherine Mansfield was a modernist writer of short fiction who was born and brought up in New Zealand
Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp Murry was born in 1888, into a prominent family in Wellington, New Zealand. She became one of New Zealand's best-known writers, using the pen name of Katherine Mansfield. The daughter of a banker, and born into a middle-class family, she was also a first cousin of Countess Elizabeth von Arnim, a distinguished novelist in her time. Mansfield had two older sisters and a younger brother. Her father, Harold Beauchamp, went on to become the chairman of the Bank of New Zealand. In 1893, the Mansfield family moved to Karori, a suburb of Wellington, where Mansfield would spend the happiest years of her childhood; she later used her memories of this time as an inspiration for her Prelude story.
Her first published stories appeared in the High School Reporter and the Wellington Girls 7 High School magazine in 1898 and 1899. In 1902, she developed strong feelings for a musician who played the cello, Arnold Trowell, although her feelings were not, for the most past, returned. Mansfield herself was an accomplished cellist, having received lesion from Trowell's father. Mansfied wrote in her journals of feeling isolated to some extent in New Zealand, and, in general terms of her interest in the Maori people ( New Zealand's native people), who were often portrayed in a sympathetic light in her later stories, such as How Pearl Button was Kidnapped
She moved to London in 1903, where she attended Queen's college, along with her two sisters. Manfield recommenced playing the cello, an occupation that she believed, during her time at Queen's, she would take up professionally. She also began contributing to the college newspaper, with such a dedication to it that she eventually became its editor. She was particularly interested in the works of the French writers of this period and on the 19 th – century British writer, Oscar Wilde, and she was appreciated amongst fellow students at Queen's for her lively and charismatic approach to life and work. She met follow writer Ida Baker, a South African, at the college, and the pair became lifelong friends. Mansfield did not actively support the suffragette movement in the Uk. Women in New Zeland had gained the right to vote in 1893.
Mansfield first began journeying into the other parts of Europe in the period 1903-1906, mainly to Belgium and Germany. After finishing her schooling in England, she returned to her New Zealand home in 1906, only then beginning to write short stories in a serious way. She had several works published in Australia in a magazine called Native Comparison, which was her first paid writing work, and by this time she had her mind set on becoming a professional writer. It was also the first occasion on which she used the pseudonym "k.Mansfied".
Mansfield rapidly grew discontented with the provincial New Zealand lifestyle, and with her family. Two years later she headed again in London. Her father sent her an annual subsidy of €100 for the rest of her life. In later years, she would express both admiration and disdain for New Zealand in her journals.
In 1911, Mansfield met John Middleton Murry, the Oxford scholar and editor of the literary magazine Rhythm. They were later to marry in 1918. Mansfield became a co-editor of Rhythm, which was subsequently called The Blue Review, in which more of her works were published. She and Murry lived in various houses in England and briefly in Paris. The Blue Review failed to gain enough readers and was no longer published. Their attempt to set up as writers in Paris was cut short by Murry's bankruptcy, which resulted from the failure of this and other journals. Life back in England meant frequently changed addresses and very limited funds.
Between 1915 and 1918, Mansfield moved between England and Bandoi, France. She and Murry developed close contact with other well-known writers of the time such as DH Lawrence, Bertrand Russell and Aldous Huxley. By October 1918 Mansfield had become seriously ill; she had been diagnosed with tuberculosis and was advised to enter a sanatorium. She could no longer spend time with writers in London. In the autumn of 1918 she was so ill that she decided to go to Ospedale in Italy. It was the publication of Bliss and Other Stories in 1920 that was to solidify Mansfield's reputation as a writer.
Mansfied also spent time in Menton, France, as the tenant of her father's cousin at " The Villa Isola Bella". There she wrote she pronounced to be "…the only story that satisfies me to any extent".
Mansfield produced a great deal of work in the final years of her life, and much of her prose and poetry remained unpublished at her death in 1923. After her death, her husband, Murry, took on the task of editing and publishing her works. His efforts resulted in two additional volumes of short stories. The Doves' Nest and Something Childish, published in 1923 and 1924 respectively, the publication of her Poems as well as a collection of critical writings (Novels and Novelist) and a number of editions of Mansfield's previously unpublished letters and journals.
Câu 1–6 — TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Do the following statements agree with the information given in Reading Passage 1? Write TRUE if the statement agrees with the information, FALSE if the statement contradicts the information, NOT GIVEN if there is no information on this.
- The name Katherine Mansfield, that appears on the writer's book, was exactly the same as her origin name
FALSE — đoạn B: tên thật là Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp Murry, còn Katherine Mansfield là bút danh — using the pen name of Katherine Mansfield. Hai tên không giống hẳn nhau.
- Mansfield won a prize for a story she wrote for the High School Reporter.
- How Pearl Button Was Kidnapped portrayed Maori people in a favorable way.
TRUE — đoạn C: người Maori were often portrayed in a sympathetic light in her later stories, such as How Pearl Button was Kidnapped. sympathetic light = thiện cảm = favorable way.
- When Mansfield was at Queen's college, she planned to be a professional writer.
FALSE — đoạn D: ở Queen’s bà định theo nghề đàn cello, không phải nghề viết — Mansfield recommenced playing the cello, an occupation that she believed, during her time at Queen’s, she would take up professionally. Ý định làm nhà văn đến muộn hơn (đoạn E, năm 1906).
- Mansfield was unpopular with the other students at Queen's college
FALSE — đoạn D nói ngược lại: she was appreciated amongst fellow students at Queen’s for her lively and charismatic approach to life and work.
- In London, Mansfield showed little interest in politics.
TRUE — đoạn D: Mansfield did not actively support the suffragette movement in the UK — phong trào đòi quyền bầu cử cho phụ nữ là chuyện chính trị, và bà không tham gia.

Câu 1–4 — Complete the table
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Complete the table below. Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer. Bảng của đề có hai cột: Stages of presentation và Work still to be done.
- Introduce Giannetti's book containing a of adaptations (việc còn phải làm: organise notes)
Băng: in one of his books he came up with a straightforward classification of film adaptations based on how faithful they are to the original plays and novels.
- Ask class to suggest the adaptations (việc còn phải làm: không còn gì)
Băng: I’d ask the class to come up with the worst examples of Shakespeare adaptations that they’ve seen. Katie nói rõ vì sao chọn bản tệ nhất: That should be more fun than having their favourite versions.
- Present Rachel Malchow's ideas (việc còn phải làm: prepare some )
Băng: I’d better do some slides instead — Joe vừa bảo không đủ thời gian tìm clip, nên Katie đổi sang slide.
- Discuss relationship between adaptations and at the time of making the film (việc còn phải làm: không còn gì)
Băng: how plays may be chosen for adaptation because they’re concerned with issues of the time when the film is made.
Câu 5–10 — Nối mỗi phim với một nhận xét (A–G)
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: What do the speakers say about each of the following films? Choose SIX answers from the box and write the correct letter, A-G, next to questions 5-10.
Bảy nhận xét để chọn (A–G)
- clearly shows the historical period
- contains only parts of the play
- is too similar to another kind of film
- turned out to be unpopular with audiences
- presents the play in a different period from the original
- sets the original in a different country
- incorporates a variety of art forms
- Ran
F — băng: using the same situation and story, but moving it to 16th century Japan instead of 16th century Britain.
- Much Ado About Nothing
A — băng: filming it in Italy, where the play is set, makes you see what life was like at the time of the play.
- Romeo & Juliet
E — băng: Romeo & Juliet the 1996 film, which moves the action into the present day. Đổi thời kỳ — đối xứng với F ở trên, và đây là chỗ hai phương án dễ đổi chỗ nhất.
- Hamlet
C — băng: it’s more like a typical action hero movie — there are loads of special effects, but no unifying interpretation of the play. Joe chốt lại: All show and no substance.
- Prospero's Books
G — băng: Didn’t it include dance and singing and animation, as well as live actors?
- Looking for Richard
B — băng: It was a blend of a documentary with a few scenes from Richard III — chỉ một phần của kịch. (Nhận xét D “turned out to be unpopular with audiences” là nhận xét thừa — không dùng cho phim nào.)

|---|---|---|
| film adaptations | các bản chuyển thể thành phim | It’s about film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays |
| illustrate a range of approaches | cho thấy nhiều cách làm khác nhau | I want to talk about a few adaptations, that I think illustrate a range of approaches |
| the original | bản gốc (vở kịch / cuốn sách gốc) | changing the two feuding families in the original to two competing business empires |
| brings the play to life | làm vở kịch sống lại | I think that’s one of the best Shakespeare films. It really brings the play to life |
Cột Word in sẵn.
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Giannetti's book containing a classification of adaptations | |

Transcript
KATIE: Joe, you know I’m giving a presentation in our film studies class next week?
JOE: Yes.
KATIE: Well, could we discuss it? I could do with getting someone else’s opinion.
JOE: Of course, Katie. What are you going to talk about?
KATIE: It’s about film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. I’ve got very interested in all the different approaches that film directors take.
JOE: Uhuh.
KATIE: So I thought I’d start with Giannetti. who’s a professor of film and literature, and in one of his books he came up with a straightforward classification of film adaptations based on how faithful they are to the original plays and novels.
JOE: Right.
KATIE: I’ve already made some notes on that, so I just need to sort those out before the presentation. I thought that next I’d ask the class to come up with the worst examples of Shakespeare adaptations that they’ve seen, and to say why. That should be more fun than having their favourite versions.
JOE: Yes, I can certainly think of a couple!
KATIE: Right. Next I want to talk about Rachel Malchow. I came across something on the internet about her work on film adaptations, and I was thinking of showing some film clips to illustrate her ideas.
JOE: Will you have enough time, though? Both to prepare and during the presentation? After all, I doubt if you’ll be able to find all the clips you want.
KATIE: Hmm. Perhaps you’re right. OK. well. I’d better do some slides instead, saving how various films relate to what she says. That should encourage discussion.
JOE: Mmm.
KATIE: Next I want to say something about how plays may be chosen for adaptation because they’re concerned with issues of the time when the film is made.
JOE: You mean things like patriotism, or the role of governments?
KATIE: Exactly. It’s quite tricky, but I’ve got a few ideas I’d like to discuss.
KATIE: And finally I want to talk about a few adaptations, that I think illustrate a range of approaches, and make some comments on them. Do you know the Japanese film Ran?
JOE: I haven’t seen it. It was based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, wasn’t it?
KATIE: That’s right. It was a very loose adaptation, using the same situation and story. but moving it to 16th century Japan instead of 16th century Britain. So for example the king’s daughters become sons, because in Japanese culture at that time, women couldn’t succeed to the throne.
JOE: OK. I hope you’re going to talk about the1993 film of Much Ado About Nothing, I think that’s one of the best Shakespeare films. It really brings the play to life, doesn’t it?
KATIE: Yes. I agree. And I think filming it in Italy. where the play is set. makes you see what life was like at the time of the play.
JOE: Absolutely, Right, what’s next?
KATIE: Er, next. I thought Romeo & Juliet the 1996 film, which moves the action into the present day.
JOE: Yes, it worked really well, I thought – changing the two feuding families in the original to two competing business empires, even though they’re speaking in the English of the original play.
KATIE: You’d expect it would sound really bizarre, but I found I soon got used to it.
JOE: Me too.
KATIE: Then I thought I’d include a real Hollywood film, one that’s intended to appeal to a mass commercial audience.
JOE: There must be quite a number of those.
KATIE: Yes. but I’ve picked the 1996 film of Hamlet It included every line of the text, but it’s more like a typical action hero movie – there are loads of special effects, but no unifying interpretation of the play,
JOE: All show and no substance.
KATIE: Exactly. Then there’s Prospero’s Books, based on The Tempest That was really innovative, from a stylistic point of view. joe: Didn’t it include dance and singing and animation, as well as live actors?
KATIE: Yes. it did. I also want to mention Looking for Richard. Did you ever see it?
JOE: No. but I’ve read about it. It was a blend of a documentary with a few scenes from Richard III, wasn’t it?
KATIE: That’s right. It’s more a way of looking into how people nowadays connect with the playwright – the play is really just the starting point. And that’ll be where I finish.
JOE: Well, it sounds as though it’ll be very interesting.
Shadowing — Are you lonely in a crowd?
|---|---|
| 2:03 | When people get together in a crowd, |
| 2:06 | they regress psychologically, their |
| 2:08 | thinking is more primitive, they |
| 2:10 | become more gullible, and that's |
| 2:12 | also associated with the supposed |
| 2:13 | tendency towards violence as well. |
| 2:17 | But according to John, the idea of |
| 2:19 | mob mentality, that people in crowds |
| 2:22 | are irrational and prone to destructive |
| 2:24 | behaviour, just isn't backed up by research. |
| 2:27 | One view is that when people |
| 2:29 | get together in a crowd, they |
| 2:31 | become irrational. Psychologically speaking, |
| 2:34 | they regress – they return to a less |
| 2:37 | advanced, more primitive way of behaving. |
| 2:40 | They may also become more gullible, |
| 2:42 | an adjective meaning easily tricked |
| 2:45 | or willing to believe everything someone says. |
| 2:47 | Connected to this is the phrase mob |
| 2:50 | mentality – the tendency of people in a |
| 2:53 | group to behave in the same way as |
| 2:56 | others in the group rather than as |
| 2:58 | individuals. In crowds, people may |
| 3:01 | do things they would never do alone, |
| 3:02 | like steal or use violence. |
3. Nghe rõ giọng con: máy tách được giọng con khỏi tiếng băng.
A. NÓI — Part 3
Part 3 (4 câu, mỗi câu 30–45 giây)
- Do you think people today know their neighbours as well as people did in the past?
- What are the advantages of living in a close community?
- Some people say cities make people less friendly. Do you agree?
- How can a neighbourhood encourage people to help each other more?
Some people believe that neighbours should be like family and help each other closely. Others think neighbours should respect each other’s privacy and keep their distance. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Write at least 250 words.
3. Nhưng vẫn phải chọn một phía: đề có chữ give your own opinion, nên viết đủ hai phía mà không nói mình nghĩ gì là mất điểm.
5. Dùng ít nhất một câu điều kiện của mầm 1 phần G — ví dụ “If neighbours kept their distance, people in trouble would have no one to turn to.”
