Bài: The History of Bicycles — 595 từ, mười đoạn.
The bicycle was not invented by one individual or in one country. It took nearly 100 years and many individuals for the modern bicycle to be born. By the end of those 100 years, bicycles had revolutionized the way people travel from place to place.
Bicycles first appeared in Scotland in the early 1800s, and were called velocipedes. These early bicycles had two wheels, but they had no pedals. The rider sat on a pillow and walked his feet along the ground to move his velocipede forward.
Soon a French inventor added pedals to the front wheel. Instead of walking their vehicles, riders used their feet to run the pedals. However, pedaling was hard because velocipedes were very heavy. The framework was made of solid steel tubes and the wooden wheels were covered with steel. Even so, velocipedes were popular among rich young men, who raced them in Paris parks.
Because of the velocipedes were so hard to ride, no one thought about using them for transportation. People didn’t ride velocipedes to the market or to their jobs. Instead, people thought velocipedes were just toys.
Around 1870, American manufacturers saw that velocipedes were very popular overseas. They began building velocipedes, too, but with one difference. They made the frameworks from hollow steel tubes. This alteration made velocipedes much lighter, but riders still had to work hard to pedal just a short distance. In addition, roads were bumpy so steering was difficult. In fact, most riders preferred indoor tracks where they could rent a velocipede for a small fee and take riding lessons.
Subsequent changes by British engineers altered the wheels to make pedaling more efficient. They saw that when a rider turned the pedals once, the front wheel turned once. If the front wheel was small, the bicycle traveled just a small distance with each turn. They reasoned that if the front wheel were larger, the bicycle would travel a greater distance. So they designed a bicycle with a giant front wheel. They made the rear wheel small. Its primary purpose was to help the rider balance. Balancing was hard because the rider had to sit high above the giant front wheel in order to reach the pedals.
This meant he was in danger of falling off the bicycle and injuring himself if he lost his balance. Despite this inherent danger, “high wheelers” became very popular in England.
American manufacturers once again tried to design a better bicycle. Their goal was to make a safer bicycle. They substituted a small wheel for the giant front wheel and put the driving mechanism in a larger rear to wheel. It would be impossible for a rider to pedal the rear wheel, so engineers designed a system of foot levers. By pressing first the right one and then the left, the rider moved a long metal bar up and down. This bar turned the rear axle. This axle turned the rear wheel and the bicycle minimized the dangers inherent in bicycle riding, more and more people began using bicycles in their daily activities.
The British altered the design one last time. They made the two wheels equal in size and created a mechanism that uses a chain to turn the rear wheel. With this final change, the modern bicycle was born.
Subsequent improvements, such as brakes, rubber tires, and lights were added to make bicycles more comfortable to ride. By 1900, bicycle riding had become very popular with men and women of all ages. Bicycles revolutionized the way people worldwide ride bicycles for transportation, enjoyment, sport, and exercise.
Câu 1–6 — Summary completion
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Complete the sentences. Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the passage for each answer.
In the invention of the bicycle took part not only one individual or the country, but the world in general during the (1) years. This invention was firstly found in Scotland in the first decades of 1800, and was known as velocipedes. They were not resembled to today’s bicycles and had two wheels, but they had no (2) . The rider sat on a pillow and walked his feet along the ground in order to move his velocipede forward. Soon, a French inventor added pedals to the front wheel. However, because of their difficulty in riding, nobody used them in a daily life, and they were accepted as (3) . Around 1870, manufacturers in America found that this invention is popular (4) , but within the difference: frameworks were made from (5) , what makes them much lighter. Soon, the British inventors found the method which can make pedaling more efficient- to turn pedals one by one. They designed a bicycle with a giant front wheel. However, as the rider had to sit high above the giant front wheel it was too difficult to keep the balance. The safer bicycle was invented by Americans. They designed the rear (6) , which minimized the danger of falling and injuring. At last, the British changed the design one last time and added two wheels equal in size and the mechanism that induce a chain to turn the rear wheel. By this there was invented the example of the modern bicycle.
Câu 7–10 — TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
- The bicycle was invited by Americans only
Bài nói ngược ngay câu đầu: The bicycle was not invented by one individual or in one country.
- It was too hard to lead the velocipedes due to their heaviness
Bài nói đúng thế: pedaling was hard because velocipedes were very heavy. Hai vế khớp từng ý: hard ↔ too hard, because … very heavy ↔ due to their heaviness.
- The alteration of velocipedes made the life of people much more easy
Bài CÓ nói về alteration — nhưng nói về cái xe: This alteration made velocipedes much lighter, rồi ngay câu sau riders still had to work hard.
- The changes by British inventors altered the wheels to make pedaling more efficient
Bài gần như nguyên văn: Subsequent changes by British engineers altered the wheels to make pedaling more efficient. Chỉ một chữ đổi: engineers → inventors.
Câu 11–13 — Sentence completion
Nguyên văn đầu bài của đề: Complete the sentences. Choose NO MORE THAN TREE WORDS from the passage for each answer.
- The British inventors concluded that if the front wheel were large in , the bicycle would travel comparatively long distance.
- American engineers designed a system of which was driven by pressing first the right and then the left pedals.
MỘT ô, và KHÔNG có dấu phẩy. Bài: engineers designed a system of foot levers.
- The last, but not least alteration in creating of the modern bicycle was a making the two wheels equal in size and using the to spin the rear wheel.
- Why did people at first think velocipedes were just toys, not real transport?
- The giant front wheel solved one problem and created another. What were they?
- What were the two last changes the British made before the modern bicycle was born?
|---|---|---|
| 3 | they were accepted as | |
| 4 | manufacturers in America | |
| 8 | due to their heaviness | |
| 10 | British inventors | |
| 11 | were large in size | |
| 12 | driven by pressing first the right |
3. Ba ô chép-từ-bài dễ mất điểm nhất
Chín ô chép-từ-bài là loại ô dễ mất điểm oan nhất: con chép đúng chữ của bài mà bảng đáp án ghi khác một chữ là con bị tô đỏ. Ba ô dưới đây là ba chỗ hay vấp.
- Ô 1 — Bài viết It took nearly 100 years và the end of those 100 years — chữ hundred không có trong bài một lần nào. Đầu bài của nguồn ghi THREE WORDS mà quên AND/OR A NUMBER, nên ô này nhận cả hai dạng — đừng sợ viết số.
- Ô 5 — Đúng ba chữ, và đây là ô duy nhất của bài dùng hết giới hạn ba chữ. Bài: They made the frameworks from hollow steel tubes.
- Ô 6 — Bài: This bar turned the rear axle. Một chữ.
|---|---|---|---|
| revolutionize | v | thay đổi hoàn toàn một việc gì | bicycles had revolutionized the way people travel from place to place |

Chỉ mở sau khi con đã tự điền cả sáu hàng. Mở trước là bỏ mất bài tập. Đáp án 13 câu thì con bấm Kiểm tra ở trên là hiện ngay cạnh ô sai.
Nghe — Part 2 — Maritime Museum

Transcript
Guide: Good morning everyone, and welcome to the Maritime Museum. Now before we commence our tour I’d just like to tell you a little bit about the history of the museum As you can see, it’s a very modern building built in the post modern style and it was in fact opened by the Prime Minister of Australia in November 1991. It’s been designed with a nautical flavour in mind to remind us of our links with the sea. But the museum isn’t only housed in this building, there are a
number of historic ships docked outside in the harbour which form part, of the museum and which you are also free to visit, and we’ll be coming to them shortly I’d just like to point out one or two things of general interest while we’re here. Handicapped toilets are located on this floor and the door shows a wheelchair. The cloakroom where you can hang your coat or leave your bags is just behind us here. The education centre is on the top floor and there’s a good little
library in there which you might like to use. Follow the signs to the Education Centre — you’ll see a lot of little green arrows on the wall. The green arrows will take you there. The information desk, marked with the small letter i on your plan is located right here in the foyer, so if you get separated from your friends, I suggest you make your way back to the information desk because we’ll be returning to this spot at the end of the tour. All right? Now if you look out
this window you should be able to see where the museum’s ships are docked. If you want to go on a tour of the old ship, the Vampire, she’s docked over there and you should meet outside on the quay. However a word of warning! I don’t recommend it for the grandmas and grandpas because there are lots of stairs to climb. Right, now, let’s move on. Oh, I almost forgot to give you the times for that tour. Now, tours of the Vampire run on the hour every hour. All right? Let’s take
a walk round the museum now. The first room we’re coming to is the theatre. This room is used to screen videos of special interest and we also use it for lectures. There’s a continuous video showing today about the voyages of Captain Cook, so come back here later on if you want to learn more about Captain Cook. Now, we’re moving along the gallery known as the Leisure Gallery. This is one of our permanent exhibitions and here we try to give you an idea of the many different
ways in which Australians have enjoyed their time by the sea: surfing, swimming, lifesaving clubs, that’s all very much a part of Australian culture. At the end of this section we’ll come to the Picture Gallery where we’ve got a marvellous collection of paintings all by Australian artists. I think you can buy reproductions of some of these paintings in the museum shop. Well worth a good look. Now we’re coming to the Members’ Lounge. As a member of the museum you would be
entitled to use the members’ lounge for refreshments. Membership costs $50 a year or $70 for all the family. So it’s quite good value because entry to the museum is then free. And down at the far end of this floor, you’ll find the section which we’ve called Passengers and the Sea. In this part of the museum we’ve gathered together a wonderful collection of souvenirs from the old days when people travelled by ship. You’ll find all sorts of things there: old suitcases, ships’
crockery, first class cabins decorated in the fashion of the day. Just imagine what it must have been like to travel first class. Now I’m going to leave you to walk round the museum on your own for a while and we’ll all meet back again at the information desk in three quarters of an hour’s time. I hope you enjoy your time with us at the museum today. Thank you.

Shadowing — Is gaming a sport?
|---|---|
| 0:06 | Hello and welcome to 6 Minute English. I'm Neil. |
| 0:09 | Hello. I'm Catherine. |
| 0:11 | And if I say to you, Catherine, fortnight, what do you think of? |
| 0:15 | Well, that's easy, Neil. A fortnight is a period of two weeks. |
| 0:19 | Well, fortnight, spelt f-o-r-t-n-i-g-h-t, is indeed a period of two weeks. |
| 0:27 | But Fortnite, spelt F-o-r-t-n-i-t-e, is an online computer game that has become incredibly popular in a very short period of time. |
| 0:38 | As well as popular, it's also very competitive. |
| 0:41 | And you're soon going to be able to make big money playing it, and you can even hire people to be your Fortnite coach. |
| 0:50 | Well, before we hear a little more about this topic, it's time for our quiz. |
Chia theo cụm, nghỉ hơi rất ngắn: “And you’re soon going to be able to make big money playing it, / and you can even hire people / to be your Fortnite coach.”
Part 2 là chỗ duy nhất con phải tự kể một đoạn dài bằng thì quá khứ: what happened → quá khứ đơn · during the journey → quá khứ tiếp diễn · by the time we arrived → quá khứ hoàn thành.
A. NÓI — Part 2
Part 2 (1 phút chuẩn bị, nói 1–2 phút)
Describe a journey you took when you were younger that you still remember.
You should say:
- where you went and who you went with
- how you travelled
- what happened during the journey
and explain why you still remember it.

3. Task 1 KHÔNG nêu ý kiến riêng. Con chỉ mô tả và so sánh những gì biểu đồ cho thấy — viết I think vào Task 1 là mất điểm.
